I'm trying to learn Italian, which is why I'm here. I can understand quite a bit of what I read, but I can't write or speak in Italian. I'm hoping someone will read this and answer a question for me. I keep seeing people writing "bananas." What exactly do they mean by that? Also, what does "W" mean? Thanks.

1. Bananas are the citizen of Banana Republic, strange people that voted Berlusconi for President and are not yet ashamed.

Look at this.

http://brunik.altervista.org/foto/evoluzione.jpg

2. W... means "VIVA..." = "long life for..."

Christine
07-09-05, 20:04
Thanks! Is the "W" commonly used to mean "viva," or just online?

brunik
07-09-05, 20:54
Commonly.

Excuse me miss Christine, our friend brukin is very clever to post pics and build graphics, but he lacks of a good knowledge about english,

W=Viva means exactly HURRA' !

Do not get confused with the italian word "Via", if you come to italy you will see a bunch of "Via Berlusconi"(and some, very few, "Via Silvioleo")

THAT'S NOT the name of these streets! NO!!! :-0#09o

It means a sort of "GO AWAY" OK? ;)

Christine
07-09-05, 21:31
:D Don't worry...I know what "viva" means, as it's the same in Spanish (which I also speak.) Thanks for the clarification, though.:)

Miss Christine, W is the opposite of "M", that means "Morte".

If you say "M SILVIOLEO", mmmh, Silvioleo gets angry, very angry.

Never say "M. SILVIOLEO". Never.

Christine

So to be safe I should just stick to "W Berlusconi," right? :)

brunik
07-09-05, 23:20
Right.

If you are a bananas you always say "W BERLUSCONI", "BRAVO BERLUSCONI", "GRANDE BERLUSCONI", "SUPER BERLUSCONI", and so on.

Silvioleo every day says it, that's really horrible. We hate Silvioleo because he breaks our balls every day with Berlusconi.

Every day. You don't know how terrible is life here with bananas. Millions of bananas that say everytime "W W SILVIO BERLUSCONI, BRAVO BRAVO SILVIO BERLUSCONI"

Remember: NEVER SAY M. BERLUSCONI. Silvioleo and other bananas are very nervous guys, they are dangerous.

Christine, have you noticed?
no one speaks/write in italian to you. It seems that everyone wants to play in english and make jokes like "auanagana". You obviously don't know that aunagana doesn't mean anything and it belongs to an old song (italian) I think...

by the way, why would you like to learn italian??

No wonder that their national politics is biased that way by that thing, you know, they are calling sense of humour.

Actually the topic of this thread was terribly serious, we are all very sorry about making so much fun of it.

Dear Christine, next time you want to talk about bananas, always remember that talking seriously about such in Italy is impossible. And this obviously affects our politics, as this far-seeing friend of ours pointed out.

* Christine, the whole issue started when you asked me, not very seriously (:D ), indeed, whether I consider Italian as an insignificant language.
Now, there is somebody else questioning my personal feelings regarding Italy, which have been sometimes a matter for discussion in other sections of P.O.L.
For the sake of clarity, now, that I am being prompted to do so, I declare herewith the following:

1. Italy is a Country with a considerable extention from the North to the South. This fact, its climatic and historical consequences, implies considerable differences between the two (potential) sections of Italy. Have you ever read about Padania?

2. I does not make much sense to me hating any particular Country in the world. I respect the Repblic of Italy as I respect the United Kingdom, the Empire of Japan or the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

3. Coming back to the real topic of your question. If I correctly understand, you referred to the usefulness of learning Italian as a foreign language. I worked for 25 years in the worldwide Export of pharmaceuticals: the only languages I really needed were English (including Indian English) and Spanish (including Argentinian).

So long! :) Hasta la proxima :)

I know there are differences between the North and South of Italy, but I only have a vague idea, since I've never been there. It's typical in many countries for there to be huge differences between the various regions.

As far as the usefulness of learning Italian, I already speak English and Spanish, which are the two languages spoken frequently here. The reason I chose Italian to learn next is simply because I consider it the most beautiful language.

* I understand, not having ever been here, it is difficult for you to really imagine the differences. In my eyes they are so huge that many people, especially in the North and in Sardinia, question the opportunity of one single national state encompassing so different areas. This is not the right place to extend on this issue, but, since you understand Italian, you can take a look at the Forum Padania. We shall be glad to explain to you the "subtle" differences. We care about PR.

I've been reading here for the past couple of months, since I started trying to learn Italian. I only understand some of what I read, and the rest I try to figure out with a dictionary. The slang phrases completely throw me, but that's the reason I chose a site like this in the first place. I like to read actual conversations instead of perfect little dialogs in textbooks.

This 3d's so hilarious i suggest someone moves it to "Esegesi". Our American guest must be a little puzzled, aren't you, Christine?? Anyways, seeing how this is mainly a political forum, what do you think about how things are going down there in the US?? Who did you vote for last November?? I really hope you dislike Bush (aka the idiot, or the dumb ape). If i recall correct, Michigan is a blue state, right (though I don't really fancy Democratic Party either)?? My favorite American organization is Socialist Party, which unfortunately is very small and under-funded. I know there are representatives in all major universities. Do you live in Ann Arbor or East Lansing?? If so, you might wanna get in touch with their representatives. I know some socialist activists from Washington State and their ideas are really great, so much different than mainstream politics. I also know some people who are part of a sort of radical feminist group, which was very strong in the town I've lived in for a while (Olympia, WA). Have you ever looked at this site's international politics forum?? I'm sure you'll find it interesting there. At least you'll kinda gauge how Italians feel about your country. You'll also find some interesting persons, I call 'em "wannabe Americans"; they don't wonder, don't have any doubt, they just stand up for your president whatever he does and worship your economic system whichever trouble it may trigger. They all claim they lived in the US for a while (some still are living there, actually); me, I think most of them never put their feet on American soil. Anyways, why don't you jot some lines in there, I believe your presence would be welcome , as well as your thoughts, much truer than the bullshit our own yankee wannabes like to talk.

Hi! I see you're trying to figure out exactly how much to dislike me. ;) Here, I'll make it easier for you. :)

What do you think about how things are going down there in the US?? "Things" is a very broad word.

Who did you vote for last November?? Bush

If i recall correct, Michigan is a blue state -- Yes, but it is also divided politically. Most of Michigan is Republican, but Detroit tips the balance to the left because of its large population.

Have you ever looked at this site's international politics forum?? Yes, actually I've read that forum the most over the past couple of months.

* Should somebody not know that flag, it was the flag of the Venetians of the Istrian Coast who helped the troops of Tito to throw their personal enemies, mostly also Venetians, into deep holes.
They are called "foibe" and can be compared in cruelty with nazi lagers. Just to complete the "abstract". The nazis used to shout "Sieg Heil" :p

Still, we were just having some fun on this thread, and you came to spread your political shit.

I really don't get this, this is a political site and this is a political forum. There are better places for pointless bullshit, and i don't see how the fun could be ended by my two "serious" contributions. Besides, if you had had anything against me talking politics, you should have told me first thing instead of saying "communist ape" thus starting this rather stupid political bias between the two of us. I'm not the only one at fault, you see. Anyways, last word for you and then we can stop this for good, I know you're not an idiot and there's worse people to argue with.

There would be a lot to discuss about what nazis did in their concentration fields. By the way, I was already aware about everything you said. :p

Utter bullshit. That's the flag of Brigate Garibaldi, the most important partisan army. We'll talk about "deep holes" when you say something deeper about 'em, something that goes beyond what you read on Alleanza nazionale leaflets.

I just meant that this was a "playful" thread, you know what I mean, there was no need to throw it into bitterness with that sharp attack you actually cast against Christine. That's all I meant, nothing else. Let's stop it here, ok? :)

I said I get mad when I get in touch with republicans, I didn't say that I need them as something to vent my anger on, so your comment makes no sense. Try again.

That's what I thought at first, but then I recalled you're a Bush supporter, so I figured I needed to clarify things up, in case you really meant what you said.

* In our area everybody knows that that flag was the former one of the Zona B of the Free Territory of Trieste, the one occupied by Tito.
I am perfectly aware of the murders of Gonars, a fascist Lager in which many Slovenians and Croatians were starved to death, if this is your point.
But you cannot compare Gonars with the Foibe: then you compare via Rastella with Fosse Ardeatine, Auschwitz with Dresden.

I would be equally irritated seeing an Italian flag with the "fascio" of the RSI (Social Republic of Italy, the State Mr. Mussolini founded in 1944 under the "protection" of Mr. Hitler)

Look, i didn't know the flag served that purpose as well, as I told you it used to be the flag of Brigate Garibaldi, the communist partisan organization. This is the only reason i use it as my avatar.

I don't understand this point. I hope, you want say that Gonars was THE tragedy, like Dachau, Auschwitz and so on. Foibe were the consequence of the repression and violence by fascists.

I fully agree, but the issue was that I could not tolerate a flag with the Red Star in its midst, since that was the flag of the people who misused the "foibe". As you will surely remember, in one of the posts above, I stressed that Iwould disagree in the same way with the public exibition of a flag with the "fascio" in its midst.
Now, matteomatteo has stated that he was not aware of the particular meaning that this flag had in our area, but he thought that it was only the flag of Brigata Garibaldi, which does not deserve any exclusion or expression of harassment.

Preaching words of wisdom, let it be! :)
