American Land

What is this land of America so many travel there
I’m going there while I’m still young
My darlin’ meet me there
Wish me luck my lovely
I’ll send freedom when I can
And we’ll make our home in the American land

Over there the women wear silk and satin to their knees
And children near the sweets I hear are growin’ out in the trees
Gold comes rushing out the river straight into your hands
And you make your home in the American land

There’s diamonds in the sidewalks
There’s gutters lined in song
Dear I hear the beer flows from the faucets all night long
There’s treasure for the takin’ for any hard working man
Who make his home in the American land

I adopted Ellis Island in the city lights spire
I wandered to the valley of red hot steel and fire
We made the steel that built the streets
With the sweat of our two hands
I gave my home to the American land

There’s diamonds in the sidewalks
There’s gutters lined in song
Dear I hear the beer flows from the faucets all night long
There’s treasure for the takin’ for any hard working man
Who make his home in the American land

The {last name}, {polish last name ending in “ski”}, the Smiths are {something} too
The blacks, the Irish, the Italians, the Germans and the Jews
{xxxx}, {xxx}, the Asians, the Arabs miles from home
come across the water with the fire down below

They died building the railroads
Worked them bones and skin
They died in the fields and factories
They’ve scattered in the wind
They died to get here a hundred years ago
They tell em now the hands that built the country roads trying to keep it down

There’s diamonds in the sidewalks
There’s gutters lined in song
Dear I hear the beer flows from the faucets all night long
There’s treasure for the takin’ for any hard working man
Who make his home in the American land

Who make his home in the American land
Who make his home in the American land
