tutto il mondo e' Paese.. ne ho avuto la riprova da quando abito nella Monterey Bay e sono a contatto per via dell'universita' con un gran numero di liberal della zona... e' arcinoto che SF sia la patria dei liberal (vedi Nancy Pelosi) .. insomma tutto qui, specie sulle coste e' un misto tra liberal, nostalgia degli hippy, grandi industrie e idee democratiche alla Pelosi... tuttavia quando si vota, oltre che per mandare a casa Bush (e qui 'affluenza e' stata altissima) c'e' da votare pure su una serie di referendum locali.
In particolare ve n'era uno circa il potenziamento e all'allargamento dell'universita' di california in santa cruz. Il centro e' molto buono e centralmente il sistema della california vorrebbe investire per ampliare il campus e proporlo appetibile a un maggior numero di studenti (anche fuori dalla california e internazionali specialmente) ... ovviamente pero' anche la contea di santa cruz dovrebbe fare la sua parte, allargando un minimo le infrstrutture... dichiarando aree idonee per la costruzioni dei dormitori.. aumentare i servizi etc..
ebbene si votava si o no per dare modo a SC di interagire e migliorare la contea tramite l'ampliamento dell'universita'.. per la circolazione delle idee.. per i giovani.. per rendere ancora una volta SC capitale non solo dei surfisti ma delle idee innovative come lo č stato negli anni 70 o in tempi recenti col genoma browser.... ... cosa fanno tutti i liberal della zona? votano tutti NO e il referendum viene bocciato

the literal traslation is...
"the whole world is a small town"... meaning that wherever you move, it's all the same, nothing really changes.... in this case I meant to say that what I was used to see in Italy... (parties acting in one way locally and at the opposite way nationwide, especially when there is something of their own under dispute) I have seen even here in California. And the same things is with the influence of the syndicates.


BTW you know that the Italian is a very figurative language, when I talk to my GF, she is barely able to understand "the tranlation" of an italian proverb.

I think the funniest American expressions are the ones we use to describe someone who's crazy or not quite there:

*His elevator doesn't go all the way up.
*He's not the brightest crayon in the box. (not exactly intelligent)
*He's one brick shy of a load. (or two bricks)
*He's one sandwich short of a picnic.
*He's one card short of a full deck.
*He's one can short of a six-pack.
*He's one fry short of a Happy Meal.
*He's one pickle short of a Big Mac.
*He's one taco short of a combo plate.
*He's one nickel short of a dollar.
*He's one pickle short of a barrel.
*He's one donut short of a dozen.
*He's one coconut short of a piņa colada.

...and on and on. We just make up our own as we go. For instance, you could say:


He's one stripe short of a zebra.
He's one block short of an igloo.
He's one stall short of a restroom.

You get the idea.
