ALESSANDRO Del Piero has netted the A-League an extra 100,000 hardcore fans in his first three weeks.

The Del Piero effect is in full swing and the Italian superstar has more than justified his $2 million-a-year price tag by luring a new generation of fans to the competition, with television ratings, ground attendances, sponsorship benefit and general interest soaring.

Repucom International, who compile trends and meaningful flow-on effect statistics for the FFA, revealed their data to The Daily Telegraph upon request yesterday and the figures are staggering.
"Repucom's various tracking measures have registered clear spikes with the signing of Del Piero - Sydney FC have really given themselves and the rest of the league an opportunity to drive longer-term growth in consumer passion and commercial value," said Lynne Anderson, Repucom's managing director, Asia, Australia and New Zealand."

Sydney FC major sponsor Webjet's media exposure for the month of September was over eight times the average for the same period last year - that's a direct result of Del Piero-generated coverage, and a potential game-changer in terms of converting exposure footprint into consumer impact.
"That media hype is evidently triggering uplifts in fan engagement - television audiences, crowds and merchandise sales are all up.

"In terms of interest in football, the latest wave of our SponsorLink tracker reveals national interest in football is up 13 per cent on the third quarter of 2011 - and we'd expect that to increase further as the season continues.
"General interest is one thing but passion is what they need, and critically, our data is showing there are over 100,000 more avid A-League fans than this time last year. It's those avid fans that will spend more within the sport and with its sponsors."
Media analyst Steve Allen described Del Piero as a "lightning rod" for the code in Australia.
"He has added 20-30 per cent to what the A-League has got, and has brought a pizzazz they may never have added," said Allen, director of Fusion Strategy.
"He is definitely the star among stars. It is very good marketing, very good hiring by the league. He is a class player who can play, and is delivering off the field too. He is a photogenic and dynamic person.
"There was some doubting press before he arrived, saying he was too old. He has been the catalyst. They have also brought in (Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono), but if he hadn't come, and the other two had, it still wouldn't be the same.
"He has been a lightning rod, he has been great on camera and on the ground, he is a PR goldmine."
Sydney FC play the first ever A-League match at ANZ Stadium tomorrow, against Perth, and officials expect more than 25,000 fans.
