Sicily: Allied troops capture the port of Augusta and Biscani airfield, and Messina is heavily bombarded.

Japan: The Japanese submarine I-179 is accidentally lost off Ino Nada.

July 17, 1943

Sicily: General Alexander was appointed Allied military governor and "benevolent" control of the island was to be established by non-Fascist Italians under the Military Government of Occupied Territory.

New Guinea: Allied forces began pushing toward Salamaua, but the main effort was to secure the Huon Peninsula and the Markham valley.

New Georgia: Japanese forces launched their only counterattack at Munda but were repulsed.

South Pacific: TF.74, comprising the Australian cruisers Australia and Hobart and the US destroyers Jenkins, O'Bannon, Radford and Nicholas, is sent from Espiritu Santo to the northwest to make good the losses in the fighting off New Georgia. 223 aircraft of 'Air Force Solomons' attack Japanese ships off Buin and sink the destroyer Hatsuyuki. Off Rendova the Japanese submarine Ro-106 sinks the landing ship LST342. Of the Japanese submarines sent to reconnoiter for a new attempt to reinforce New Georgia, I-11 attacks TF.74, torpedoing the Australian cruiser Hobart and also 1 ship; I-17 is sunk off Espiritu Santo by 2 US aircraft from VS-57 and the New Zealand corvette Tui; and I-19 destroyers 1 ship off Fiji.

Rastenburg: Hitler orders reinforcements to be sent to the Balkans, believing that the Allies will strike there next.
