July 21, 1943

Sicily: The Allies claim 40,000 prisoners, and that they control half the island.

South Atlantic: The German U662 is sunk by a Mariner flying boat of VP-94 off the Amazon estuary.

Arctic: The German minelayers Ostmark and Kaiser, escorted by the minesweepers M361, M302, M364, M272 and the A/S trawlers UJ1202, UJ1209 and NH06, lay a mine barrage to cover the Varanger peninsula. An attack by Soviet torpedo bombers is unsuccessful.

Eastern Front: An anti-Hitler National Committee of Free Germany was formed in the Soviet Union.

July 24, 1943

Germany: "Window" decoy tinfoil to confuse German radar was used for the 1st time by RAF aircraft in the Hamburg raid. Only 12 of 740 bombers were downed, testament to its initial success. A total of 2,396 tons of bombs were dropped on the city, since it was a vital strategic importance with its 3,000 industrial plants, most of which were involved in war production.

Air War/Norway: 208 Fortresses of the 8th AF bomb the harbor installations of Trondheim. The German U622 is sunk and the destroyer Z28 is damaged.

Mediterranean: The Italian corvette Cicogna is damaged beyond repair in a USAAF attack on Messina.

Air War/Italy: 33 aircraft of RAF Bomber Command attack Leghorn on their flight back from North Africa to Great Britain.

English Channel: In moving from Boulogne to Ostend, S68 and S77 are attacked north of Dunkirk by British MGBs and MTBs, which sink S77. The following night S110, S136, S81 and S88 are moved from the Hook of Holland to Boulogne; S88 is damaged on a mine but brought into Dunkirk.

At Sea: In the last week 7 U-boats have been sunk in the Atlantic, and one off Trondheim.

Eastern Front: German aircraft bomb Leningrad, killing 210 people.

July 25, 1943

New Georgia: The US 43rd and 37th Division launch a major assault on Munda, but make very little progress.

Germany: Hitler orders mass production of rockets for attacks on London to avenge the bombing of Hamburg.

Italy: King Victor Emmanuel III has Mussolini arrested and appoints Marshal Badoglio the new head of government.

North Sea: The German patrol trawler V801 is sunk west of Terschelling by an airborne torpedo.

Mediterranean: The German MMS R186 is sunk by an air attack off Spadafora in the Strait of Messina.

US: The American destroyer escort Harmon was launched. It was the 1st US Navy ship ever named for a black, Leonard Roy Harmon, a mess attendant killed while saving a shipmate's life during the fight for Guadalcanal. He received the Navy Cross posthumously. The ship was christened by his mother.

Greece: Hitler dispatched Rommel, his "favorite general", to command German forces in Greece. Hitler still believed the Allied landings in Sicily were a deception prior to the main operation which would be in Greece.

July 26, 1943

Italy: A new Italian government under Pietro Badoglio proclaimed martial law throughout the country, dissolved the Facscist party, and banned all political meetings.

North Atlantic: Bombers of Air Cdr Atlantic sink the British freighters El Argentino and Halizones in the Atlantic northwest of Lisbon and badly damaged 2 more freighters.

Essen: After a heavy raid on the Krupp armaments works last night, Dr. Gustav Krupp von Bohlen suffers a stroke when he sees the burning ruins.

July 28, 1943

Sicily: Allied units capture Nicosia and Agira.

Caribbean: The German U359 is sunk by an aircraft from VP-32 in the central Caribbean.

Italy: Allied surrender terms were broadcast to the Italians by Roosevelt.

Aleutians: Japanese forces were secretly evacuated from Kiska. The US was totally unaware of their removal and was proceeding with plans for an armed invasion.

July 29, 1943

Germany: The press celebrates Mussolini's 60th birthday, showing Hitler's continued loyalty to the Duce.

Solomons: A squadron of cruisers and destroyers shells the Japanese base at Shortland while other vessels lay mines in the area. Some of the US convoys bound for New Georgia are sighted by the Japanese but they mistakenly believe that they are merely carrying supplies to Guadalcanal.

Certo che più coglioni di Badoglio c'erano da cercare con il lanternino eh....

cmq a proposito della caduta di Mussolini, qualcuno sa come mai Bombacci fu ucciso assieme a Mussolini a Dongo? sapevo che erano amici da giovani ma come mai si ritrovarono( il fascista e il comunista) giustiziati assieme?

New Georgia: US forces mop up resistance on Bartley Ridge, but are driven off Horseshoe Hill.

China: Over 2 million people have died or become refugees because of a severe famine in Hunan province.

Europe: Up to 50,000 civilians have been killed and over 800,000 made homeless by the Allied bombing so far.

Italy: Hedley Verity, the Yorkshire and England cricket captain, dies in a POW camp.

Eastern Front: The Supreme Soviet decorates Marshal Georgi K Zhukov with the Order of Suvorov, and General Ivan S Konev with the Order of Kutuzov, for their roles on the eastern front.
