Dutch low-cost airline V-Bird grounded
Three thousand passengers were left stranded last week when Dutch low-cost carrier V-Bird stopped flights. The airline, which used Düsseldorf-Weeze Airport, an ex-British military base in Germany, as its home base, has not declared itself insolvent, however. A V-Bird spokeswoman said the airline was in talks with a potential US investor and aimed to resume flights as soon as possible. Passengers, who included a large number of Alltours customers, would be refunded for their tickets, she confirmed. Alltours switched its customers to other flights from Düsseldorf-Weeze or from Düsseldorf International Airport. V-Bird, with 185 employees, flew to 18 destinations, including Munich, Berlin, Stockholm and Copenhagen, from the airport, which previously called itself Niederrhein. Its strategy was to compete with other low-cost carriers with a mix of low prices and a limited service.
