"Continental Delays Launch Of Direct Flights To Moscow"
Tuesday December 7, 9:18 AM EST
MOSCOW (Dow Jones)--Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL) said Tuesday it plans to delay the launch of its direct flight from the U.S. to Russia until the second quarter of 2006.
The airline had said it planned to launch a nonstop flight between Newark, New Jersey, and Moscow in May 2005.
However it is taking longer to start business operations in Moscow than the company expected and the carrier has delayed its plans, said Nick Britton, a London-based spokesman for Continental.
Continental is set to become a second foreign carrier to operate direct flights between Russia and the U.S. Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Russia's flag carrier OAO Aeroflot (AFLT.RS) fly nonstop from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport to New York's Kennedy Airport. Aeroflot also has three weekly flights from Moscow to Los Angeles and Seattle, and two weekly flights to Washington via New York.
Britton couldn't specify which Moscow airport Continental will use or how many flights a week the airline would be flying between Moscow and Newark.
Aeroflot and Delta declined to give exact figures for passenger traffic between the U.S. and Moscow. However Dow Jones Newswires' estimates the number of travelers at between 200,000 and 300,000 a year, based on the size of the aircraft and the frequency of the flights the two airlines operate on the routes.
"The route is good, but it's rather thin," said Hans Wicks, Delta manager for Russia and the CIS. "It would be very difficult to expand traffic on this route."
Aeroflot declined to comment.
Yelena Sakhnova, an analyst at the United Financial Group forecast the number of people traveling between Russia and U.S. to grow and said the market will be big enough for three carriers.
"Continental will be able to find its niche on the market," she said.
