backbench Labour MP tonight broke with his party’s line on immigration by suggesting that economic migration to the UK should be halted.
Roger Godsiff, MP for Birmingham Sparkbrook and Small Heath, said that “enough is enough” and the country no longer needed economic migrants.
His comments go much further even than those of Conservative leader Michael Howard, who has called for an annual cap on immigration, with an Australian-style points system to ensure that migrants have skills needed by British industry.
And they stand in stark contrast to Home Office policy, which has encouraged foreigners to come to the UK to fill gaps in the workforce in occupations such as agriculture, hospitality and nursing.
Mr Godsiff told BBC Radio 4’s Westminster Hour: “I do not believe that economic migration is any longer necessary and I also don’t think it is going to be good for the future of race relations in this country.
“I have to view it as a Member of Parliament representing a constituency which has already taken in a large number of first and second generation immigrants, who have assimilated and who have contributed a great deal to the development of the country.
“But enough is enough.”
Home Secretary Charles Clarke has maintained a policy of managed migration set up by his predecessor David Blunkett with the aim of meeting the labour needs of key sectors of British industry.
Before his resignation at the end of last year, Mr Blunkett said: “We need legal migrant workers to help fill the 600,000 vacancies in the UK labour market, particularly in sectors which are experiencing recruitment difficulties..
