Lufthansa's Terminal 2 in Munich will handle more than 20 million passengers this year, a record. Karl-Ulrich Garnadt, head of Hub Management Munich for LH, told ATWOnline that the carrier and its partner airlines are growing at the hub at a faster rate than had been expected; "In June we saw a passenger increase of 13%. If our growth continues this way, we will be running out of capacity [in T2] by 2008." He added that Lufthansa, which invested 40% of the €1.2 billion ($1.46 billion) it took to build T2, will have to find a solution together with airport operator Flughafen Munich Gmbh. By year end, the airline will decide when to begin extending the terminal and building a new concourse. It operates eight traffic banks at its No. 2 hub, three of which are at maximum capacity already. It has 16 long-haul aircraft based there and wants to increase this to 45 by 2015. Last week, FMG announced it will begin the planning process leading to construction of a third runway although a timetable was not given (ATWOnline, July 28).
