PARIS 2007: Emirates commits to another eight A380s
    By David Kaminiski Morrow

Middle East carrier Emirates has agreed to purchase another eight Airbus A380 aircraft, taking its total commitment to 55 of the type.

It disclosed the agreement at the Paris air show today.

The airline, which has signed a letter of intent for the additional jets, has yet to disclose an engine selection. Emirates has so far opted to equip the type only with Engine Alliance GP7200s.

“This should leave no one in any doubt about our commitment to Airbus’ very large aircraft,” said Emirates chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum.

Emirates is by far the largest customer for the A380. The airline is to begin taking delivery of those already on order in the third quarter of next year.

ATR today unveiled at the Paris Air Show an order from Brazil-based TOTAL Linhas Aereas for 5 new ATR aircraft (3 ATR 42-500s + 2 ATR 72-500s) plus options for 5 additional aircraft (3 ATR 42-500s + 2 ATR 72-500s). The contract is valuated at over US$ 160 million, options included.

These new ATR aircraft will be equipped with the new “Elegance Cabin” and with the newest technological innovations in the field of communications and navigation aid tools.

TOTAL Linhas Aereas has been an ATR operator for many years, but this marks the first time the airline has signed for new ATR aircraft. The ATR 42-500s and ATR 72-500s will be delivered in a 48 and 68-seat configuration respectively.

TOTAL Linhas Aereas Chairman Alfredo Meister Neto underlined that “the ATR aircraft are the perfect solution for the fast growing Brazilian regional market and contributed fundamentally to the development of our airline. We have been successfully operating ATR aircraft with success for now 11 years. This order is another very important step in our long-standing partnership. Thanks to ATR’s new generation aircraft, our passengers will benefit from the highest standards of service, comfort and performance.”

Stéphane Mayer, who on 1st June succeeded Filippo Bagnato as ATR CEO, said: “This order is further proof of the adaptability and quality of our product and reinforces the continuous worldwide success of ATR on the regional market. The rapidly growing regional market in Brazil has been an important success story for ATR. It’s also a demonstration of the advantages of the family concept, with a high degree of commonality between the ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft that results in major cost savings and flexibility for the operator”.

Since the beginning of the year, ATR has received orders for 53 new aircraft, some of them not yet unveiled. Since the beginning of the programme, ATR has sold 890 aircraft (416 ATR 42s and 474 ATR 72s) and has delivered 727 (393 ATR 42s and 334 ATR 72s), thus posting a current backlog of 163 aircraft.

Malaysian-based Berjaya Air (an indirect subsidiary of Berjaya Corporation) signed a US $74 million agreement with ATR for 4 new ATR 72-500 aircraft. The deal was announced today at the Paris Air Show by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan, Berjaya Corporation Chairman and CEO and Stéphane Mayer, who on 1st June succeeded Filippo Bagnato as ATR CEO.

With this order Berjaya Corporation becomes a new ATR customer. These 4 new ATR 72-500s will be delivered in 2009 and 2010 in a 72-seat configuration and equipped with the new “Elegance Cabin” and with the newest technological innovations in the field of communications and navigation aid tools.

The new ATR 72-500 aircraft will replace Berjaya Air’s existing fleet of 48-seater Dash 7 aircraft and would subsequently help to improve Berjaya Air’s financial performance in terms of lower maintenance cost and increase in seating capacity. In addition, the new aircraft will allow Berjaya Air to expand its reach to other parts of the Asean region.

Commenting on the order of the new ATR 72-500 aircraft, Chairman and CEO of Berjaya Corporation, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan said: “These new aircraft will enable Berjaya Air to offer faster and quieter flights to its tourist destinations of Redang Island, Koh Samui and later on to Tioman Island, as well as to increase its passenger capacity and number of flights. It will also enable Berjaya Air to operate more economically and therefore lower its air fares.”

Stéphane Mayer and Filippo Bagnato, stated: “We warmly thank Berjaya Corporation for the confidence it has shown to ATR with this first order for ATR aircraft. With the introduction of the latest generation of ATR aircraft in their fleet, the airline can achieve the highest standards of services and performance with unbeatable economics and comfort. Furthermore, the aircraft is environment friendly, which is an important consideration for airlines today”.

ATR is moreover seeking to build a long-term strategic partnership with Malaysia, given its high quality airline industry and significant potential for growth in the regional market. ATR sees a requirement for up to 100 ATR42/72-500 in the BIMP-EAGA markets (Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines) to mostly serve the rural areas and tourist destinations.

    Ottima notizia per ATR,
mi preoccupa solo il fatto che non stanno sviluppando un sostituto o una nuova versione. Cabina Elegance a parte, la serie -500 e' in giro da oltre 10 anni!

Sukhoi Nabs First Buyer for Civilian Jet
Tuesday June 19, 1:11 pm ET
Russia's Sukhoi Wins First Foreign Buyer for Civilian Jet

LE BOURGET, France (AP) -- Russian aviation heavyweight Sukhoi won its first foreign customer for its civilian Superjet at the Paris Air Show on Tuesday, announcing a 20-plane deal with Italian regional carrier Itali Airlines.

Majority state-owned Sukhoi, renowned for its fighter planes, has long sought a higher profile for its passenger plane plans, and the Kremlin has set high hopes on the Superjet program. It's being developed with help from American and European aviation companies.

Itali Airlines ordered 10 Superjet 100-95s in a 98-passenger version, with options for 10 more, for a total value of $283 million, Sukhoi Chief Executive Mikhail Pogosian said at the air show in Le Bourget, near Paris.

The first units will be delivered in 2009 and all 10 aircraft will be in service by 2011, Pogosian said.

The twin-engine aircraft will allow the Pescara, Italy-based airline to increase the frequency of flights on its domestic network, Sukhoi said in a statement.

Tuesday's deal brings to 71 the number of firm orders Sukhoi has for the Superjet so far. All the others are from Russian customers.

The rollout of the first Superjet is expected in September, with its first flight by the end of the year. Russia's flagship airline, OAO Aeroflot, is expected to put the first Superjet into service in late 2008.

Pogosian said Sukhoi is negotiating with several international airlines about the Superjet. He hopes to sell at least 700 of the jets, including 35 percent to North America, 25 percent to Europe, and just 7 percent in Russia and China.

The deal may boost a bid by Italian conglomerate Finmeccanica SPA and its Alenia Aeronautica subsidiary to buy a blocking stake of 25 percent plus one share in Sukhoi's civil aviation arm. The deal, signed a year ago, is still awaiting Russian government approval.

Finmeccanica said the deal will involve designing and developing the production and the marketing of passenger planes with 75-100 seats. Finmeccanica has said it could invest up to 300 million euros ($376 million) in the venture.
