Predefinito runway incursion a Los Angeles

    Runway incursion at airport
LAX: Misdirection of huge All Nippon Boeing 777-300 jet to shorter runway is attributed to improper use of new tag.

An unusual set of circumstances led to another runway incursion at Los Angeles International Airport last week, when an air traffic controller mistakenly directed a Boeing 777-300 aircraft to a taxiway that was too short to accommodate it, the Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday.

An All Nippon Airways jetliner arriving from Tokyo had a data tag designating the aircraft as "B77W," which was not recognized by anyone in the LAX control tower on June 19, according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

As a result, the pilot was directed to a taxiway deemed too short to handle the massive aircraft, causing part of the plane to protrude five feet into the 205-foot safety zone around one of the northern runways, Gregor said.

The "B77W" tag is a new international designation for Boeing 777-300 jetliners, and that information was never passed down to controllers working at LAX Tower, Gregor said.

At the same time, an American Airlines MD-83 aircraft landed on the north airfield and rolled past the All Nippon Airways jetliner, Gregor said.

There was no chance that the two jetliners would have collided, but the situation was still considered to be a runway incursion, he said.

The FAA has preliminarily attributed the incident to an error by an air traffic controller, but that may change, Gregor said.

"We certainly don't want this controller to ultimately be held responsible for this incident because it doesn't appear that anybody at LAX Tower knew what the B77W data tag meant," Gregor said. "This is a situation where the controller didn't have all the information he or she should have had. You don't want to blame the controller for something that was out of his or her control."
