    Thumbs up Onore a quest'uomo!!!

Vladimir Arutyunian was born on 12 March 1978 in Tbilisi, Georgia to a family of ethnic Armenians. On 10 May 2005 he made an attempt to assassinate U.S. President George W. Bush during his visit to Georgia.[1]

    [edit] Grenade incident

On 10 May 2005, Arutyunian threw a RGD-5 hand grenade, wrapped in a red tartan (plaid) handkerchief, toward the podium where President Bush stood as he addressed a crowd in Freedom Square in downtown Tbilisi.[2] The grenade landed 18.6 metres (61 feet) from the podium, near which Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, his wife Sandra E. Roelofs, Laura Bush, and other officials were seated. The grenade, however, failed to detonate.

    [edit] Investigation

Georgian officials claimed that the grenade was a non-combative engineering type used in training, which either did not contain explosives or would have had to be very near the President to cause him any harm, and that it had been placed approximately 100 feet from the podium where Bush was speaking, in an attempt meant to scare the crowd and gain media attention.[3] However, after an investigation, Bryan Paarmann, head of the FBI office in Tbilisi, reported that it was a live grenade which had been thrown, hitting a girl in the crowd, which cushioned the impact and prevented the grenade from detonating.[4] Officials initially said that President Bush had been in no danger, but Bryan Paarmann of the FBI later identified the attack as endangering the President's life, saying "We consider this act to be a threat against the health and welfare of the President of the United States and the president of Georgia as well as the welfare of the multitudes of Georgian people who had turned out for this event."[4]

    [edit] Arrest

On 18 July 2005 Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili issued photos of an unidentified suspect and announced a reward of 150,000 Lari (USD $83,000) for information leading to the suspect's identification.

Police arrested Arutyunian after a shootout on 20 July 2005. During the skirmish Arutyunian killed a Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs agent. He then fled into the woods in the village of Vashlijvari on the outskirts of Tbilisi. After being wounded in the leg, he was captured by Special Forces soldiers about an hour later. He confessed in the hospital as staff treated him for gunshot wounds.[5]

The city court of Tbilisi sentenced him to life imprisonment on 11 January 2006.[6]

His name is Vladimir Arutyunyan; he was captured by Georgian police after a shootout in which he killed a policeman and was himself wounded. On May 10, when President Bush was giving a speech in Tbilisi, he threw a hand grenade at the stage. It landed within 25 yards or so, but failed to go off. After Arutyunyan was arrested, police found more hand grenades and unspecified chemicals in his apartment.

What I find rather weird about this is the almost total lack of coverage of his assassination attempt and subsequent capture in the American press. As best I can tell from a Google Search, the Washington Times is the only American newspaper that has even noted Arutyunyan's arrest. How is it possible that American journalists have so little interest in an attempt to assassinate our President?

The only parallel I can think of is the ho-hum attitude that journalists showed toward Saddam Hussein's attempt to assassinate former President George H. W. Bush--which was, in my view, more than ample reason to oust Saddam from power. Coverage of the disclosure of that attempt was so sparse that I would guess many Americans have no idea that Saddam tried to murder the former President.

Maybe the current political climate is making me paranoid, but I cannot imagine that our news services would be equally indifferent to an attempt to assassinate a Democratic President.

CORRECTION: Seth Lipsky, editor of the New York Sun, writes:

Per that post by john, I believe the Sun has printed at least three stories about the arrest of that would be assassin in Georgia. I think arutyunian is the way the ap is spelling it.

Seth is right; a Google search on the above spelling shows that the AP's story has run in a number of papers. The basic point, though, is still right: this story has gotten amazingly little interest or coverage, with the exception of a few outlets like the Sun.

    Bush Survives Assassination Attempt

Back in May an assassination attempt was made on President Bush in Georgia (the nation not the state). Apparently Dean did not learn of this until now. I had heard of it at the time but only in a single article I simply stumbled upon. He links to a post that notes:

What I find rather weird about this is the almost total lack of coverage of his assassination attempt and subsequent capture in the American press. As best I can tell from a Google Search, the Washington Times is the only American newspaper that has even noted Arutyunyan's arrest. A very good question. The attempt on Reagan's life is part of our national memory. Everyone knows who John Hinkley is. Who knows who Vladimir Arutyunyan is? If you had asked me just 10 minutes ago I'd have no idea who you were talking about. Isn't there something wrong about this? The guy lobbed a grenade at our President. How is this not newsworthy? I cannot recall a single mention on television news. I'm going to assume Fox News said something (because I can trust them) but I cannot say the same for NBC, CNN, ABC or any other alphabet soup network.

    Additionally:

The only parallel I can think of is the ho-hum attitude that journalists showed toward Saddam Hussein's attempt to assassinate former President George H. W. Bush--which was, in my view, more than ample reason to oust Saddam from power. Coverage of the disclosure of that attempt was so sparse that I would guess many Americans have no idea that Saddam tried to murder the former President.

A very good point. The leader of an enemy nation tried to assassinate a former U.S. President. This, in and of itself, is more than enough reason to have forceably removed Saddam from power.

Why doesn't the liberal media care when a Rebuplican President is nearly assassinated? Now that I think about it maybe that's how they prefer their Republicans - dead. The MSM didn't start gushing over Reagan until he died afterall. I think I may have something here...

Life For Grenade Toss At Bush Rally
Georgian Convicted Of Throwing Dud Grenade At Bush During Visit

(AP) A Georgian court on Wednesday convicted a man of attempted assassination for throwing a grenade at a rally where U.S. President George W. Bush and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili were appearing and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The court also convicted Vladimir Arutyunian for killing a policeman in the course of an operation to arrest him several weeks after the May 10 incident.

Mr. Bush and Saakashvili were addressing a rally of thousands in Tbilisi from behind a bulletproof barrier when the grenade, wrapped in a cloth, landed about 100 feet away. It did not explode, and investigators said it apparently malfunctioned. No one was harmed.

Arutyunian was arrested in July on the outskirts of Tbilisi after a shootout that killed one officer. Arutyunian was later shown in television footage from a hospital bed admitting that he had thrown the grenade, throwing it high with the aim of having it explode so that the bulletproof glass would not block shrapnel.

Arutyunian, whose trial began last month, has acknowledged that he threw a grenade in the direction of the stage and said he would try again to kill Mr. Bush if he had the chance.

Mr. Bush and Saakashvili learned of the incident only after the rally.
