Il Gothic Rock è sempre stata musica per pochi. Negli anni Ottanta ci furono alcuni gruppi che raggiunsero il mainstream e diedero al genere notorietà internazionale (Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie, etc.), ma tantissimi gruppi avevano una circolazione davvero limitata e per alcuni di questi oggi è pure difficile trovare il loro repertorio in CD. E' il caso degli Stiff Kittens, di cui si sentono gli echi dei più noti Sisters of Mercy...

Grazie del contributo, questi me li sono persi. Purtroppo allora io non seguivo affatto il "Gothic". Finito il Dark intorno agli anni 1985-86, mi era rimasta la scena neo-folk e industrial di Death In June, Current 93 e Coil, perché i miei contatti nell'ambiente ascoltavano solo quello. Io ero maggiormente dark-oriented e per un po' continuai a seguire la scena eterea fino a quando l'avvento del grunge e del crossover non modificarono completamente la geografia del rock. In seguito a ciò io, come molti altri legati ad un sound ancora per certi versi "new wave", mi sentii estromesso dal nuovo corso e troncai di netto col rock alternativo. Fu un vero peccato perché di lì a poco sarebbe partita una nuova generazione "gotica" che aveva in Italia i suoi riferimenti in riviste come Ritual, Ver Sacrum, Ascension... Purtroppo tutto questo corso, durato pressappoco un ventennio, io me lo sono perso e l'ho recuperato solo successivamente. Ma di questa storia ne parlerò, se ci riesco, più diffusamente, in futuro.

E' stata una coincidenza significativa che i Death In June tornassero con un album di inediti di una certa sostanza nel momento in cui il sottoscritto riprendeva confidenza con una musica e un sentire. Coincidenza significativa ovviamente per me, che della "Morte in Giugno" sono stato estimatore e sostenitore devoto per dieci, intensissimi anni (1984-1994). Cosicché ricomprare questo "Essence", 2018, dopo "Something Is Coming" che nel lontano 1993 celebrava il risorgente nazionalismo croato, dando il via ad una serie di speranze malposte, frantendimenti penosi e cocentissimi abbagli, nella mia esperienza personale e nel mondo, era un modo per ripensare e ripensarsi, di tornare indietro ma con una prospettiva diversa. Ma quale prospettiva ha oggi Douglas P., eccetto quella, comprensibilissima di difendere e di reiterare la propria storia e il proprio marchio? Ecco, sinceramente, dopo aver ascoltato questo disco e averlo pure fondamentalmente apprezzato per quanto è stato capace di riportarmi indietro, non l'ho capito. La stagione del neofolk si è protratta troppo a lungo, forse. Ciò che era senza dubbio innovativo e d'avanguardia trent'anni fa oggi mi pare mostri la corda in misura notevole. O forse il mio è solo risentimento per come l'industrial abbia in un qualche modo segato le gambe al più canonico dark al quale ero più legato sul piano musicale, emotivo ed esistenziale. Non lo so. Ricordo che quando uscì il primo disco dei Sixth Comm, Content with Blood, i fans più schierati della Morte in June trattarono l'uscita del vecchio amico/rivale Patrick Leagas alla stregua di un convenzionalotto album di synthpop. Quando quello era un disco stupendo. Forse allora iniziai ad avere sulle balle tutto un certo discorso sulla sperimentazione che a volte promuoveva la produzione di dischi inascoltabili quanto pallosi. Ecco, l'ho detta. Perché questa musica e questa scena mi hanno dato tanto ma anche tolto parecchio. Tornare indietro, al caro Doug, significa anche ammettere che sì, nonostante i ricordi e l'affetto, qualcosa di meglio pure c'è.
