Details — but not photos — are sketchy about “Ruby.” Italian media report her to be an 18-year-old Moroccan with the real first name of Karima with a penchant for night clubs who claims to have had inexplicably good relations with Berlusconi. He is said to have given her a luxury car and once to have made a phone call to facilitate her liberation from jail after she was arrested for theft in May.

Fittingly, given the sound of it, Bunga Bunga even has an international dimension.

Vincenzo Indolfi, recently promoted to prefect of Milan, but in May still the city’s police chief, told Turin daily La Stampa that nobody demanded that he order the release of “Ruby.” Rather that unidentified people close to the premier told one of his deputies that she was the niece of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Berlusconi, who is not under investigation, has said he has done nothing to be ashamed of, and his defense lawyer told the ANSA news agency he’s ready to sue for defamation over any suggestion that he’s organizing a common storyline for eventual witnesses to use.
