The French president, François Hollande, has said his country has “a problem with Islam” and that there are too many illegal migrants arriving in France.
He also suggested that today’s “veiled woman” could become a Marianne, the female symbol of the French republic, and attacked his rival Nicolas Sarkozy as “the little De Gaulle”.
The controversial remarks are published in a 660-page book, A President Should Not Say That: Secrets of Five Years in Office.
Hollande, 62, also spoke of the women in his life and how his actor girlfriend, Julie Gayet, wanted to be de facto first lady of France, which he said was a “hot topic” between them. He admitted he is feeling lonely and betrayed in the Elysée Palace, where he sometimes feels like a “ghost”.
The French leader, whose desperately low popularity ratings make it uncertain as to whether he will stand for a second term in office, made the comments during more than 60 interviews with Le Monde journalists Gérard Davet and Fabrice Lhomme.

The Swedish government has accused Tehran of using a Shi'ite Muslim mosque in Stockholm to spy on Sweden and the Iranian diaspora there.
The Swedish Security Service has assessed that the Imam Ali Islamic Center in Stockholm was used by Iran as a means of spying and conduct activities threatening security, said Sweden's Minister for Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed on his X account.
The Swedish minister called it "extremely serious," adding that Sweden had stopped all state monetary aid to the center. "State funds should not be used for activities that conflict with fundamental democratic values."
"An additional process" is under way, he added, without providing further details.
Iranian cleric Mohsen Hakimollahi, the Islamic Center's imam, was arrested nearly two weeks and faces deportation from Sweden, Expressen reported Friday.
“He has been missing for more than ten days, and we learned through various channels that he is in one of the Swedish Migration Board's detention centers and will soon be deported from the country,” added the source.
The Imam Ali Islamic Center, considered the largest Shi'ite institution in Northern Europe, has not issued a public statement on the matter.
Hakimollahi, aged 63, was transferred from Iran to Sweden to manage the Shi'ite center and had resided in the country for several years, developing connections with local political figures and religious organizations.

Il 29 gennaio, una scena di violenza si è consumata nel cuore di Roma, in via Nazionale, quando un minorenne, indossando una kippah, simbolo della sua fede ebraica, è stato avvicinato da un uomo che lo ha colpito a mani nude. Il ragazzo si trovava in compagnia della madre, ignara di cosa stesse per accadere. L’autore del gesto violento, identificato come un cittadino egiziano di 33 anni, è stato rintracciato a breve distanza dal luogo dell’incidente grazie alla segnalazione immediata al 112.
La tempestiva reazione delle forze dell’ordine, tra cui la Digos, il Commissariato di Polizia di Stato Trevi Campo Marzio e Trastevere, ha consentito di localizzare l’aggressore e fermarlo. Da quanto ricostruito dagli investigatori, subito dopo l’aggressione al minore, l’uomo ha reagito violentemente anche nei confronti di un esercente commerciale della zona, che era intervenuta per difendere le vittime dell’incidente. In questo frangente, l’aggressore ha estratto una bottiglia di vetro da una delle tasche dei suoi indumenti, minacciando la donna con l’oggetto.
L’indagine ha rapidamente confermato il quadro ricostruito dalle vittime. Le immagini registrate dagli impianti di videosorveglianza della zona hanno contribuito a confermare la dinamica dell’accaduto, permettendo l’identificazione dell’aggressore. Al termine degli accertamenti, l’uomo è stato arrestato con l’accusa di tentato omicidio mediante lesioni permanenti, per aver aggredito il minore con l’intento di deformargli il viso.
Il provvedimento restrittivo è stato convalidato dalla competente Autorità giudiziaria. L’aggressore, senza fissa dimora e privo di significativi precedenti di polizia, è titolare dello status di protezione internazionale in Italia. A seguito dell’arresto, l’Ufficio immigrazione della Questura ha avviato degli approfondimenti per valutare la posizione dell’uomo sul territorio nazionale, in stretto raccordo con l’autorità giudiziaria competente.
