FPÖ to increase platform for right-wing parties

Italy's vice-Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini is invited to an official visit in Vienna in September by the vice-chancellor Susanne Riess-Passer, FPÖ. This invitation is seen as an important element in the long-term strategy of the FPÖ of constructing an international, acceptable platform for European right winged parties, Die Presse reports.

According to sources surrounding the vice-chancellor, there has been contact with Fini's party, the National Alliance, as well as to other right-wing parties in Denmark, Portugal and Norway, in an attempt to lead the party out of its European isolation.

This could explain the negative reaction of Susanne Riess-Passer to Haider's spectacular contacts with the Belgian "Vlaams Blok", who have close contacts to the French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen. In the FPÖ circles, one is afraid that Jörg Haiders contact with the Flemings could disturb the integration of the FPÖ into a European parliamentary group.

It appears that Mr Fini is ready to cooperate with Susanne Riess-Passer but not with Jörg Haider.
