An Air France Concorde flight landed safely at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Thursday morning despite losing pieces of the plane’s rudder during its flight from Paris, airline and FAA officials said.
The same plane was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last Wednesday after engine trouble was reported.
Flight 002 landed at 85 a.m. Thursday without incident and was towed to a hangar, where two inspectors from the Federal Aviation Administration investigated what happened, said Arlene Salac, an FAA spokeswoman. She said they found about a 1 1/2-foot part of the left side of the lower rudder was missing, as well as a 4-foot piece of the right side.
The rudder is the rearmost portion of the aircraft’s vertical stabilizer or tailfin, and controls turns by moving left or right. Its upper and lower sections can be operated separately.
Alan Hicks, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, said no emergency procedures were required.
An Air France spokeswoman said there were 38 passengers and nine crew members on board. An airline spokeswoman in Paris said the incident would not halt Concorde flights.
