New Guinea: Australian troops take Finschhafen airfield.
Solomon Islands: The Allied airfield at Vella Lavella starts operations.
North Sea: Mining operation 'Probestuck' by 29 German motor torpedo boats of the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th MTB Flotillas off Harwich and Orfordness: 120 mines are laid. In engagements, S96 sinks the trawler Franctireur and is herself rammed by ML145 and has to be abandoned. Three British MLs are damaged.
North Atlantic: En route to the Mediterranean, U667 is damaged west of Gibraltar by Leigh Light Wellingtons 'D' and 'R' of No 179 Sqn RAF and has to return to France. On its way back she is again attacked, by Wellington 'X' of No 179 Sqn RAF and Hudsons 'T' of No 233 and 'N' of No 48 Sqns RAF, and is again damaged but reaches St-Nazaire.
Mediterranean: In the area of Corfu, the Italian torpedo boats Stocco, Sirtori, and Cosenz are destroyed in German air attacks.
Germany: Berlin announced the evacuation of Smolensk and Roslavl.
