Fallito attentato a Chavez

"Non è un crimine tentare di uccidere un capo di stato".

E' quanto affermato dall'ambasciatore americano in Venezuela, Charles S. Shapiro, in risposta alle accuse mosse da Chavez alla CIA e al governo Bush di avere recentemente organizzato un attentato contro la sua vita, attentato non andato a segno per l'improvvisa decisione del presidente venezuelano di non recarsi all'Assemblea generale all'ONU lo scorso 24 settembre.

Secondo l'Associated Press, il governo americano aprirà un'inchiesta per stabilire la veridicità delle affermazioni del Presidente venezuelano Hugo Chavez Frias, riguardo il complotto organizzato per assassinarlo.

Chavez ha affermato che "gruppi terroristici" nel sud della Florida si sono alleati con radicali anti-Castro della città di Miami.

E intanto l'ambasciatore, Charles Shapiro, afferma: "Non è necessariamente un crimine... comunque noi stiamo raccogliendo informazioni e seguiremo tutte le procedure legali...se c'è qualcuno da accusare, il nostro governo sa cosa fare!".

Con la tipica retorica americana, Shapiro ammette di aver ricevuto informazioni che "alcuni venezuelani stanno ricevendo addestramento militare negli Stati Uniti".

Ha inoltre ammesso di sapere che tale notizia era comparsa un anno fa in un giornale di Miami...ma naturalmente è rimasto in silenzio quando gli viene chiesto quali iniziative erano state prese a tale riguardo dalle autorità americane.

"Al momento non inizieremo azioni contro qualcuno...ma stiamo facendo progressi". Intanto il Presidente Chavez Frias ha dovuto cancellare il suo programmato viaggio all'ONU del 24 settembre poiché fonti dei servizi segreti avvevano rivelato che un complotto era stato organizzato dalla CIA contro l'aereo in viaggio verso l'Assemblea Generale.

Chavez ha chiesto agli USA di investigare le sue affermazioni e, allo stesso tempo, ha ribadito la necessità che il presidente Bush cessi di interferire negli affari interni del Venezuela. "Negli Stati Uniti stanno cospirando contro il Venezuela" ha affermato Chavez in un suo intervento alla televisione "il popolo di questo continente deve sapere che i loro [degli Stati Uniti] terroristi stanno preparando un attacco contro il Venezuela".

Hugo Chávez and the war in Colombia


On several occasions, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, has expressed his wish to help Colombia find a peaceful solution to the long war in that country. However, the Colombian oligarchy, including the press, military and government has categorized the efforts of the Venezuelan president as an intromission in Colombia’s domestic affairs.


01.10.2003 (By Carlos Quintanilla*) It should be remembered that after a few months of taking office in Venezuela, President Hugo Chávez expressed that he wanted to meet Commander Manuel Marulanda Vélez, the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The administration of then president Andres Pastrana immediately closed all doors to that possibility.

As it can be remembered, ex-President Pastrana became irritated and verbally attacked Chávez. The meeting Chávez-Marulanda would have been historic for the two neighboring peoples that today hold the political ideas of Liberator Simón Bolívar.

It is sad, but many Colombian presidents have closed the possibility of a dialogue with the rebels of the FARC. Their fear, particularly the fear of the current president, the ultra-right winger Alvaro Uribe, is that FARC will win what is known as the ‘Belligerent State’. However, the Colombian administrations will not accept that the FARC long ago won the State of Belligerence label through the armed struggle.

According to the Latin American press, FARC has been recognized as a Belligerent Force since 1984, from the moment the president at that time, Belisario Betancourt, through radio, television and the written media, ordered all security forces in Colombia to stop their military operations against the FARC, and, at the same time, Commander Manuel Marulanda Vélez, using the same media, ordered his guerrilla forces to stop military operations against State representatives.

It should also be pointed out that President Hugo Chávez, in regional forums and in the United Nations (UN) itself, has come out in favor of a political solution to the war in Colombia, and against intervention.

Nevertheless, that peaceful position has caused president Hugo Chávez to become the victim of a destabilizing campaign, started not only by the most reactionary sectors of his country but also by the Colombian sectors as well.

During these last months, high U.S. officials have traveled to Colombia and have also questioned the help that the Venezuelan government is allegedly giving to the FARC. General Richard Myers, Chief of Staff of the Army of the United States, after meeting with Uribe, stated his concerns about the presumed connections between the Venezuelan government and FARC.

In the middle of all this, it sould be stated that President Alvaro Uribe is playing a very sad role, allowing that threatening statements against the Venezuelan government be made from his own country. Uribe must abandon his confrontational politics and must sit and talk to the guerrilla. He must also respect and take into account the good offices offered by president Hugo Chávez for peace in Colombia. Venezuela is also enduring the consequences of Colombia’s domestic war. A negotiated resolution would be the solution.
