PASADENA, California (CNN) -- A NASA robotic explorer touched down on Mars, sending a signal home that it survived the risky descent through the Martian atmosphere and bounced to a halt.

The $400 million rover Spirit, designed to conduct unprecedented geologic and photographic surveys on the Martian surface, transmitted a simple hello to Earth minutes after landing.

"This is a big night for NASA. We're back [on Mars]," Sean O'Keefe, NASA's chief, said at 120 a.m. ET Sunday, about half an hour after confirmation of the successful red planet landing, the space agency's first since 1997.

Within hours, it beamed back images from its new home, stunning black and white snapshots that elicited excited shouts from mission controllers. Spirit will need more than a week to begin its roaming expedition, which is expected to last at least 90 days.

The golf cart-sized Spirit went through what NASA assistant administrator Ed Weiler characterized as "six minutes from hell" -- the time it took to enter the Martian atmosphere, descend and land in Gusev Crater.

During the descent, Spirit deployed parachutes and fired retrorockets to decelerate. Seconds before impact, it inflated a protective cocoon of airbags. Everything went as planned.

"It went to perfection. I can't tell the difference between what was predicted and what actually happened," said Rob Manning, the descent and landing manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

A series of bounces and rolls may have sent the robot up to four stories high and more than a mile from its landing spot, according to mission control scientists at JPL. The final stopping spot has elated mission researchers.

"The rocks, to a great extent, look swept clean. It's a much cleaner surface than what we had a right to hope for," said Steven Squyres, a Cornell University geologist in charge of the scientific instruments on Spirit and its identical twin, Opportunity, which will complete the 300 million-mile trip to Mars in three weeks.

"It's a very good surface for driving. It couldn't be better for what this vehicle is designed for," he said.

Stunning panoramas
Packed with a slew of geology instruments and cameras, Spirit has much more mobility and capability than the most recent successful visitor to Mars. The 1997 Pathfinder mission included a lander, which beamed back thousands of images, and Sojourner, a toy-sized test rover that scurried around the rocks and boulders littering the landing site.

Each of the new rover twins, however, is built to explore nearly as much territory in one day as Sojourner covered in three months, about 100 yards.

And each comes equipped with eight cameras that should provide stunning panoramas of the Martian surface, with resolutions so sharp they retain crisp detail when blown up to the size of a movie screen, according to NASA. Their microscopes, spectrometers and drills could unlock geologic secrets from billions of years ago, when the now cold and dry planet is thought to have been warm and wet.

Death planet
Spirit's landing generated cheers, hugs and applause at NASA's mission control. Team members had waited nervously for confirmation, knowing too well that Mars has often proven a deadly place to visit. Two-thirds of the more than 30 spacecraft that have attempted to reach or orbit Mars have met with disaster, including two NASA attempts in 1999.

The most recent casualties include Japan's Nozomi, a satellite zapped by lethal solar radiation during its four-year odyssey to Mars. Mission engineers abandoned their attempts to steer the ailing craft as it neared the red planet last month.

Another possible victim is the Beagle 2, an ambitious life-searching lander from Britain, which has remained silent since its presumed touchdown December 25.

U.S. Rover Sends Home Dramatic Pictures of Mars

PASADENA, Calif. (Reuters) - A robotic explorer beamed stunning images of the bleak Martian surface back to Earth, showing on Sunday it had made a safe landing in what NASA scientists said could be a dry lake bed ideal for finding signs of life on the red planet.

The black-and-white pictures showed a panoramic view of the barren, rock-strewn Martian landscape surrounding the Spirit lander, which touched down at the wind-swept center of the Gusev crater -- exactly where project managers had hoped.

"It's a place almost ... tailor-made for our vehicle," Mars Exploration Rover chief mission investigator Steve Squyres said. "It's a glorious crater. We have hit what the science team believes is the scientific sweet spot."

The pictures, taken at mid-afternoon Mars time, show a vast expanse of what appears to be desert extending to the horizon in every direction. The scientists were intrigued by dust-filled hollows they said may be one of the rover's first stops. They also were trying to gauge the distance to a series of ridges.

"The images are outstanding," Mars Exploration Rover science manager John Callas said as the pictures from Spirit began to appear on a giant screen at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

"The quality (is) the best that have been taken. This is incredible."

The pictures captured Mars for the first time in stereoscope -- offering unprecedented depth of field that will allow NASA to more accurately pinpoint areas of exploration.

Squyres said if the landing site inside the crater was in fact a dry lake bed, its sedimentary rock could have preserved clues about the planet's ancient past.

The spacecraft sent between 60 and 80 pictures -- an unexpected bounty for the Spirit team -- to the passing Odyssey orbiter during a 12-minute communications window and gave NASA scientists a glimpse of the lander itself, which had traveled seven months through space to search for life on Mars.

FULLY CHARGED AND READY TO GO

Data collected from the lander also showed it survived its long journey and risky plunge to the Martian surface in good shape and apparently ready to begin its primary geologic mission. The state of the vehicle is clearly very good ... the batteries are fully charged and ready to go," Jennifer Trosper, Spirit mission manager for surface operations said. The only apparent flaw was that the lander had butted against a large rock that could stand in the rover's path.
But elated project managers said they could not have asked for a better outcome for the lander -- which came to rest upright and almost perfectly level after bouncing and rolling for as much as a mile.

And they said the mission had already accomplished a first by establishing an interplanetary satellite communications relayed by the Odyssey orbiter that has been circling Mars for several years.

Science teams worked through the night evaluating data sent back to Earth by the rover and said they expected the first color images to be transmitted later on Sunday. Engineers were expected to spend the day testing Spirit's systems and scientific instruments before preparing it to roll off the lander in about a week.

In getting to the surface of Mars, the spacecraft survived what one NASA administrator called "six minutes of hell" -- the parachute and retro-rocket assisted descent through the planet's atmosphere. The agency said more than half of man's missions to Mars have ended in failure.

NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe popped champagne at a post-landing press briefing, declaring: "This is a big night for NASA -- we're back ... We're on Mars."

Mars claimed two NASA spacecraft in 1998 and 1999. The agency is still trying to explain the loss of a space shuttle Columbia and its crew last year.

The $820 million mission's success was of utmost importance to the U.S. space program and O'Keefe called it a "double-header" following the successful Stardust mission on Friday that intercepted a comet and gathered particles in a first that could offer clues about how Earth began.

PASADENA - La sonda americana Spirit è atterrata con successo sul pianeta Marte dopo un viaggio di sette mesi nello spazio. I tecnici della Nasa del centro di controllo di Pasadena hanno accolto con una esplosione di gioia, seguita da baci e abbracci, il primo segnale inviato dalla sonda dalla superficie del Pianeta Rosso, circa venti minuti dopo il complesso atterraggio. Tutto si è svolto alla perfezione nei sei minuti finali, quelli decisivi, del lungo viaggio di quasi 500 milioni di chilometri della sonda: il paracadute per frenare la discesa si è aperto al momento giusto, i razzi frenanti sono entrati in azione, i giganteschi airbags che proteggevano come un bozzolo la sonda hanno attutito l'impatto con la superficie del Pianeta Rosso. Ciascuna di queste fasi è stata accompagnata da segnali di conferma accolti ogni volta da applausi dai tecnici Nasa.

IMMAGINI - Dopo che la sonda è rimbalzata più volte sulla superficie, protetta dagli airbags, vi sono stati quasi venti minuti di silenzio prima che Spirit riuscisse a inviare il suo primo segnale sulla Terra confermando che tutto era andato bene. I tecnici della Nasa hanno accolto l'arrivo del segnale, l'equivalente di un «sono arrivato bene», con un'autentica esplosione di gioia, resa ancora più entusiasmante dalla lunga serie di insuccessi registrati dagli ultimi tentativi di far atterrare sonde su Marte. La sonda Spirit è atterrata all'interno del cratere Gusev, che ha un diametro di 150 km, alle 23,35 di sabato a New York, le 5,35 di domenica mattina in Italia. Poco più tardi, Spirit ha iniziato a inviare anche immagini del Pianeta rosso, che mostrano paesaggi marziani e il grosso cratere in cui è avvenuto l'atterraggio. Anche le immagini sono state accolte dagli applausi del Laboratorio Propulsione Jet dell'agenzia spaziale a Pasadina.
