GREENS DENOUNCE UNDEMOCRATIC ELECTION RESULT

The massive Liberal Democrat majority in Kingston & Surbiton demonstrates the distorted choices forced on voters by the unfair voting system says Kingston Green Party. The contest became a referendum on the Conservative Party; with the Labour Party and the Greens ruthlessly squeezed by large numbers of Liberal Democrat leaflets about a close contest and the need to vote tactically. The result was that thousands of voters chose not the party and principles they favoured, but voted against the party and candidate they least liked. Thousands more chose not to vote because they felt their vote wouldn’t count. With a fairer voting system i.e proportional representation, all votes are worth casting and the results and turnout would be very different.

Chris Spruce, who came fourth with 572 votes, said “I thank those voters who backed the Green Party and promise them that we will work with advocates of proportional representation in all parties to campaign for a referendum and win a fair voting system for this country. We obtained 1% of the votes in this election yet just a year ago in the elections for the Greater London Assembly we achieved 7%. The difference is that last year’s was under a proportional system and the general election was under this outdated ‘First Past the Post’system.”

Around the country the Greens averaged 2.85% of the vote in the 150 constituencies they contested. This was well up on the 1997 election, and in 10 seats they saved their £500 deposit by scoring over 5% of the vote.
