Alitalia - by Jon Tammela
6 June 2004
Magnifica Class Alitalia from JFK to FLR through Milan. Intercontinental service was on Boeing 777, Milan to FLR was on an Airbus 319. I have flown equivalent classes on Air France and Delta and feel I can make an accurate comparison. I was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience on Alitalia. Check in at JFK easy enough, although the separate area for Magnifica Class is not well marked. I was in a long line for coach passengers for a while before I walked up to an agent on the end of the row to inquire about whether there was a separate check in for this class (I found it hard to believe there wasn't). I was directed to a room behind the main counter that was for Magnifica Class passengers (you can not visualize this area as you walk in the terminal, nor from the main check in counter, nor are there any signs to steer you that way). Once in the proper location, check in was very easy, no wait, bags were personally taken from us and tagged. We were directed to the gate. The separate room with refreshments and couches for check in is a nice touch, away from the hustle and bustle outside. The Alitalia lounge within the gate area at JFK is beautifully designed with a bright, airy feel, nice leather couches, Italian art works displayed on the walls. The staff were pleasant and informed us that we could remain in the lounge until we would be paged overhead 15 minutes before flight time (economy boards first). On arrival in the plane, we were directed personally to our seats (with a smile). The seats themselves were excellent - leather touches, incredibly wide, and almost a full recline. These are much more comfortable than Delta and Air France business (I have not experienced AF's new business class seats though). Personal TV with about ten movies, could stop and start at leisure, good music selection. Food was above average, wine the same. Again, I found the service excellent. Americans probably inappropriately expect that overdone familiarity and friendliness found elsewhere (think annoying Southwest crew who make you sing a song to board early). I personally find the minimal but effective interaction with the crew to be what I would expect and desire - professional. I think the Alitalia crew was again superior to Delta and AF. Transfer to FLR was seamless, every flight was on time. The Airbus 319 to FLR looked brand new. Again crew was fine. The lounge in Milan is subpar - needs a makeover. Our trip back was pretty much identical. Luggage was among the first off, tagged as priority both ways. All in all, I would fly Alitalia again given a chance. Given the reviews written on this and other websites, perhaps I was lucky.
