Per esempio nella vignetta raffigurata qui a sinistra, di Derkaoui-abdellah (Marocco), si illustra l'islam che cerca di disegnare la colomba della pace, mentre la Danimarca dall'altra parte la cancella. Con la colomba che guarda torva la gomma da cancellare danese. Un riferimento più che esplicito alla vicenda delle vignette su Maometto che attribuisce le cause delle tensioni alla Danimarca e la volontà di pace all'Islam, senza riferimenti, per esempio agli incidenti e agli scontri verificatisi in vari Paesi.

SOME very vile and vicious things are done in the name of freedom. Mischief and bad motivation attach themselves, surreptitiously and parasitically, to noble ideas. We've seen a lot of that lately.

I note, without surprise, that a couple of prominent Australian media personalities who loudly advocated the Iraq war and who have publicly called for my internment, and that I be taken down because of my cartooning freedom, are now vigorously championing the rights of the Danish cartoonists. Very suspicious!

I am also suspicious of the motivation behind the commissioning of the famous Danish cartoons. I suspect that hatred may lie at the heart of the matter, even though hatred is a condition the West increasingly disowns.

The anti-cartoon riot story, as ugly as it is, must surely be the consequence not only of a handful of dull cartoon cliches, but of the accumulated anger resulting from the humiliation, persecution and suffering inflicted on Islam by the West. The cartoons are taunts, probably deliberate, to an aggrieved and traumatised spiritual community who feel at the mercy of the West's contempt, ignorance and ruthless military might.

Any cartoonist with a heart or a conscience (from whence good cartoons come) would not mock or taunt such a group in this formally transgressive way. I like Manning Clarke's advice here: look with the eye of pity, which implies mercy and respect, the qualities that redeem a society more than the quality of raw freedom.

Any Australian who has lingered in an indigenous community learns of the traditional sacred protocols and chooses to respect them or not. To publish a photograph of a recently deceased Aborigine is something a white photographer might be asked to avoid. It is a matter of respect and character whether the photographer complies.

Public cartoon ridicule is properly dumped on the slick and the mighty, the officially powerful, on our own smug mob, on the triumphant ones protected by helicopter gunships and offices of state.

Cartooning is psychoanalytic and it is best when it discomforts us, not them, but hopefully it heals us too. It is a healthy act of self-criticism; an act of moral, psychological and cultural self-examination; otherwise it's propaganda.

And remember: the President and the Prime Minister have masses of spin doctors, media executives, Danish editors, bodyguards, secretaries, armies and public institutions rooting for them. You don't need to worry about our leaders too much. Although I must admit, they do worry me a lot.

Michael Leunig could be labeled as an outspoken cartoonist, political-humorist, social-observer, modern day philosopher or catalyst for free thought but look closer and you will find a simple man with a loving heart.

Michael Leunig was born in East Melbourne, Australia in 1945. He was brought up in a working class family in an industrial area called Footscray. As the second eldest of five children, Michael's works can be often interrelated with his youth, i.e. his childhood duck.

E' molto rude ma acuta e non cosi insultante...

Dice "una volta voi eravate oppressi e c'erano slogan cretini che aggiungevano la beffa al danno, adesso..."
Capisco che susciti molta più rabbia da chi avrebbe preferito il reciproco dei maiali e del turbante con le bombe.

E' una vignetta intelligente...qualsiasi persona di buonsenso paragona Israele ..a un grandissimo ghetto..o campo...Adesso c'è pure il muro..che difende...ma imprigiona...
Che la guerra stia diventando sul buon gusto..? Speriamo....Così qualcuno si accorgerà che anche in Iran esistono esseri umani....

Mi ricorda tanto i grandi cesti di fiori e frutta..che erano sulla tavola di Saddam prima della guerra...Volevano ricordare che anche lui aveva sensibilità...era un essere umano...Mi colpivano..Non li ho mai visti quando parlava Bush...
Credo che le vignette siano una lezione di bon ton...
