Eliminating the impossible

I said I'd never do it -- say what I think about that terrible morning of September 11, 2001. I've seen what happens to those who question the elaborate, tangled explanations the Bush administration offers about what happened, how it happened, who did it, and why they did it. It doesn't matter if those who dare speak truth to the lies are professors, investigative reporters, eyewitnesses, scientists -- "conspiracy theorist" is immediately tattooed on their foreheads. They are jeered at, ridiculed, spat upon and swift-boated right out of the room. They are banished to the outskirts of civilized society.

Bush gioca la carta dell'uomo comune, per cercare di salvare quello che rimane della sua presidenza.

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - George W. Bush is taking time to explain himself, open up to the public in new ways and court the U.S. Congress as he tries to breathe life into a presidency beset by sagging ratings and influence.

With a job-approval rating under 40 percent, Bush, who went to his Crawford ranch for a quiet weekend, has a long way to go. Aides acknowledge it will take a while to rebuild his image, and much will depend on the outcome of the Iraq war.

White House staffers, who have long limited the president's appearances to speeches and photo opportunities with little contact with regular people, are now inclined to let Bush be Bush.

So let Bush be Bush. Let him try to explain away the number 2,332. Let his press conferences be carried live so Americans can see the face of the man who betrayed their trust. Let Bush be Bush. And let's see if he hits 30%.

The Washington Post has a great article on this, concluding that letting "Bush be Bush" basically boils down to "fratboy towel-snapping humor" and an "average joe" attitude that isn't likely to win over critics. I don't think it's likely to win over Americans either, since jokes aren't likely to lead this nation back on track.
