Perché il Kosovo può essere considerato, sotto molti punti di vista, uno “Stato criminale perfetto”. Dove non c'è che una piccola criminalità comune. Apparentemente, tutto va bene. Gli omicidi diminuiscono, le rapine diminuiscono, le violenze private diminuiscono, anche il traffico di esseri umani si è molto ridimensionato nel corso degli ultimi tempi, ma tutto ciò per lasciare spazio alla grande corruzione, per lasciare spazio al grande traffico della droga e degli esseri umani. Il Kosovo e' lo snodo cruciale dell'eroina prodotta in Afghanistan e consumata nell'Europa occidentale. Quasi il 70% dell'intero flusso della rotta balcanica della droga è controllato da gruppi kosovari e albanesi, non solo nella fase del transito, ma anche nella fase della distribuzione nelle principali città europee. Questa è la realtà che non si vuole vedere e ci si gira dall'altra parte. E questo è un errore grosso e tragico che molti europei stanno facendo.

Didn't John Gibson say that Karl Rove deserved a medal for outing Valerie? Another question needs to be asked of this President. If Iran is such a threat, why does Bush still have on his staff a man (Rover) who betrayed the identity of a CIA agent that was working on this very serious issue.

PMBComment: Thomas L. Friedman, who most recently flattened(Balle spaziali!) the world for the average reader, has written a superb cover story for this month’s edition of Foreign Policy. The title on the cover reads “The First Law of Petropolitics: Why the price of oil and the pace of freedom always move in opposite directions”. Inside, accompanied with simple graphs that track both the seemingly unstoppable rise in the price of a barrel of oil next to plummeting measures of political and social freedom, the famed writer expands on the ills that define life in such “petrolist states” as: Iran, Russia, Nigeria and – of course – Venezuela. The rise of petro-authoritarism can only be challenged, concludes Friedman, through a “credible and sustainable strategy for finding alternatives to oil and bringing down the price of crude oil”. I fully agree. Democracy, weak institutions, and bountiful oil revenues do not yield a potable cocktail. (see previous and related post)
