The United States has condemned Tuesday's coup in Thailand and called for the restoration of democracy in its close ally as quickly as possible.
Expressing "disappointment", the White House urged the coup leaders to keep their promise to hold elections.
But there was no demand for deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to be returned to power.
The head of the coup, Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin, has said he will appoint a new prime minister within two weeks.

No timeframe was given for the ban.
Ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra said he would take a "deserved rest", but called for quick elections.
Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva challenged the military's timeframe
and called for elections in six months.
Coup leader Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin has proposed a year-long
transitional period as a constitution is drafted.
The BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the ban on parties is quite
a worrying indication for a coup which was supposed to be light and smooth.
The order also banned the formation of new parties.
The statement said the order would be reversed when normality returned.
Public gatherings of more than five people are already forbidden under
