Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline today (10th Oct) announced its 18th European and second Spanish base in Madrid. From 22nd Nov 2006, Ryanair will invest $210M in 3 new aircraft and 14 routes that will deliver 1 M passengers p.a.

Announcing Ryanair’s 18th European base in Madrid, Michael Cawley, Ryanair’s Deputy CEO said;

“Ryanair is delighted to make Madrid Barajas its 18th European and second Spanish base. We welcome the development of facilities in Madrid Barajas airport to encourage low fares and competition which have won this new base for the Spanish capital. As a result Ryanair will invest $210M in 3 Boeing 737-800 aircraft and open new routes from Madrid to 14 exciting destinations. This will transform the market in Madrid by allowing passengers to fly for a fraction of the high fares charged by Iberia.

“Ryanair’s 1 M passengers per annum will deliver a visitor spend of €110M that will sustain 1,000 jobs and stimulate business and tourism throughout the whole Madrid region.

“These new routes are available for booking today from just €1* on www.ryanair.com and we advise passengers to book early as demand will be very strong”.

Con la mossa di Ryanair salgono a ben 3 le low cost che hanno aperto una base a Madrid:

Easyjet con (per ora) 3 aerei basati
Ryanair con (per ora) 3 aerei basati
Vueling che entro febbraio avrà 7 aerei basati

Per Iberia si preparano tempi duri....

Strano che non abbia attivato voli dalle altre grossi basi europee, cioe' Hahn e Stansted.
E spero in un Baden Baden - Madrid!

Caspita, è la prima volta che FR apre base in uno scalo assolutamente principale!

Una FR che, almeno in questo caso, smentisce le sue antiche dichiarazioni secondo cui non avrebbe operato su scali principali.

Ma due destinazioni in Svezia erano indispensabili (esclusa NYO peraltro). Invece di Billund (Danimarca) e Gothemburg non potevano mettere Bergamo e Roma?

Roma mi sa che e' gia' ben servita dalle low cost su Madrid.
Bergamo non so.
Mi sorprende l'assenza di collegamenti con la Germania, ma forse la concorrenza dei vettori tedeschi e di Easyjet e' forte e FR aspetta di consolidare la propria posizione a Madrid prima di espandersi in mercati "difficili".
