Qantas Airways filled more seats in February as it boosted passenger numbers domestically and on low-cost carrier Jetstar.

Qantas filled 79.6 percent of seats in February, 3.6 percentage points more than a year earlier. Domestic passenger numbers rose 3.7 percent to 1.2 million while international routes carried 5 percent fewer passengers. Jetstar posted a 28 percent jump in passengers.

The airline is boosting profit margins by cutting jobs, filling more seats and using Jetstar on international routes. Qantas raised its earnings forecast twice since agreeing to an A$11.1 billion ($9.2 billion) buyout on Dec. 14.

The airline has forecast profit will rise as much as 30 percent next year. Pretax profit should meet the A$1.23 billion average of analysts estimates for fiscal 2008, Qantas said on March 15.
