Richard Branson said his Virgin Atlantic Airways will begin flights from continental Europe to the U.S. in "the next couple of years" as part of a global network with Australian, African and U.S. airlines.
" You'll see Virgin planes taking off from all over Europe to America," Branson said. "We have de facto, I suppose, become a global airline."
Branson, who is chairman of the airline's parent, Virgin Group, plans to use the new, so-called open skies agreement between the U.S. and European Union to fly trans-Atlantic routes from Paris, Frankfurt and other major airports. The carrier would compete with flights by Air France-KLM Group, Deutsche Lufthansa and American Airlines.
"To see what will happen in Europe you have to look at the success Branson has had in the U.K.," said Howard Wheeldon. "He alone managed to challenge the domestic flag carrier, British Airways."
The London-based billionaire also has a stake in a U.S. low- cost carrier, Virgin America, which Virgin Atlantic could use for domestic connections. Virgin Atlantic is 49 percent owned by Singapore Airlines, the world's largest carrier by market value.
