Lufthansa is
looking for European acquisitions "about the size" of Iberia, though the Spanish carrier remains
too expensive said Lufthansa Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Mayrhuber.
Lufthansa spokesman Michael Lamberty confirmed comments made by Mayrhuber in an interview with Die Welt am Sonntag. The Europe's second-biggest airline, can "
theoretically imagine a purchase" of Iberia but, because of takeover speculation the "
price isn't right" Lamberty said.
"We can do it, we've done it in the past and we will do it again in the future. It just has to be right" Mayrhuber said according to the newspaper. Lufthansa can ``theoretically buy anyone in Europe,'' he said while reiterating that Iberia is currently too expensive.
Iberia shares have gained 43 percent this year on speculation the carrier may attract more possible bidders in addition to TPG Inc. The Fort Worth, Texas-based buyout firm said in March it may offer 3.4 billion euros for Iberia as carriers prepare for wider access to U.S. routes under the open skies treaty.
