LUCKNOW, India (Reuters) - Un famoso bandito che molti indiani consideravano un Robin Hood che difendeva le foreste dallo sfruttamento illegale e dai contrabbandieri è stato ucciso oggi nella parte settentrionale del Paese, dopo 32 anni di latitanza. Lo ha annunciato la polizia.
Shiv Kumar Patel, 56 anni, conosciuto anche come "Dadua", è stato ucciso assieme a 10 altri membri della sua banda nello stato dell'Uttar Pradesh.
Il bandito era accusato di oltre 200 crimini tra i quali omicidio, estorsione e sequestro di persona.
Molti contadini locali lo ammiravano come una sorta di Robin Hood. Spesso derubava i ricchi per dar da mangiare ai poveri, in particolare a quelli che appartenevano alla sua casta, dei kurmi.
Per decenni Dadua era riuscito a nascondersi nelle giungle dell'Uttar Pradesh e del vicino Madhya Pradesh.

Lo chiamavano il 'bandito verde', perchè non ha mai smesso di lottare anche per proteggere le foreste del Paese dallo sfruttamento senza scrupoli. L'uomo era ritenuto responsabile di omicidi, estorsioni e rapimenti e le autorità gli contestavano fino a 200 reati. Daduà era inoltre a capo di una vera e propria banda criminale e dieci dei suoi membri hanno perso la vita insieme al loro leader oggi nel blitz delle autorità che ha messo fine alla lunga fuga. Molti tra gli abitanti dei villaggi dell'India del nord, dove il bandito principalmente agiva, lo hanno sempre visto come un moderno Robin Hood, che spesso rubava ai ricchi per sfamare i poveri, in particolare chi apparteneva alla casta kurmì, ai più bossi livelli nel sistema indiano e di cui faceva parte lo stesso Dadua.

The Special Task Force (STF), comprised of police teams from northern Uttar Pradesh state and central Madhay Pradesh state, killed the dacoit Dadua also known as ‘the green’ bandit in a dusk-to-dawn gun battle in a 250km thick stretch of forest in Chitrakoot district, about 300km south of Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow, officials said.
Dadua, 56, whose real name was Shiv Kumar Patel, was on the official list of “dreaded dacoits” for 32 years, and carried a reward of about Rs500,000 rupees on his head. He had been on the run since 1982 when the first major offensive was launched to catch him, STF Inspector General AK Jain told news channel NDTV.
For decades, the Uttar Pradesh police could not even procure a photograph of Dadua, who had as many as 241 criminal counts including murder, dacoity (armed robbery), extortion and kidnapping registered against him in Uttar Pradesh alone.
At least 10 members of his gang were also killed. Among those killed was Dadua’s confidant Angad Patel, who was also wanted in as many as 75 cases.
“It was was among the biggest anti-dacoity operations in the country,” said Kant Misra, STF Additional Director General. Mishra said that Dadua was the “most wanted Indian bandit after the slain Veerappan.”
Veerappan, another most wanted jungle-living dacoit, was killed three years ago after being pursued for decades by federal police and law enforcement officials of three southern states. In the absence of his photo in police records, Uttar Pradesh’s police officials got villagers to confirm Dadua’s identity. Police officials said that Dadua enjoyed wide local support.
Many hailed him as “Robin Hood”, as he would often rob the rich to feed the poor, particularly those belonging to his own socially backward ‘kurmi’ caste. However, it was his political clout that provided him immunity. Often associated with different political parties, he was often accused of issuing threats to force people to vote.
But it was his habit of shifting political loyalties that eventually cost him dear, a former Uttar Pradesh home secretary said on condition of anonymity. – DPA
