Nel new england certe pronunce sono più simili a quella inglese per il tipo di immigrazione che c'è stata,e anche perchè sono rimasti più vicini alla madrepatria. A Boston praticamente non pronunciano la r intervocalica,un detto scherzoso dice "pahk the cah in the yahd" (parcheggia la macchina nel parcheggio)

La pronuncia d [r] in tutte le posizioni comunque non è un'innovazione americana,esisteva in Inghilterra ma stava sparendo già dal XIII secolo. Era stata presa come standard la pronuncia del sud dell'Inghilterra (Londra e Oxford). La maggior parte di quelli che emigrarono negli usa però proveniva dal nordest dell'isola,dove ancora esisteva la pronunica di [r] in tutte le posizioni.. il risultato fu che in inghilterra venne presa come standars una particolare pronuncia,negli usa un'altra.

Ci fu un periodo in cui la pronuncia bostoniana sembrò potessi affermare come standard,un po'come l'inglese oxoniano per quello britannico,ma alla fine prevalse il "general american" o "standard american".

Facevano un rock squisitamente melodico, ma non erano pop.

Gli WASP più che altro li trovi nel Maine e New Hampshire (ci sono pochissimi neri lì), a partire dal Massachusetts già trovi una popolazione più eterogenea.
