All terrorism roads lead to Pakistan, says Rushdie

NEW YORK: Describing Pakistan as the centre of world terrorism, renowned author Salman Rushdie has slammed Islamabad for its "cynical denial" that the terrorists involved in Mumbai attacks were not its nationals.

Participating in a panel discussion at the Asia Society, Rushdie said that the terror attacks in Mumbai were marked by brutality by the attackers and incompetence of government and security agencies in responding to them.

During the discussion, panelists agreed that all terrorism roads lead to Pakistan and expressed skepticism that Islamabad would dismantle the terror groups.

They said the world should send clear message to Islamabad that terrorists are becoming a liability to Pakistan and it is in its own interest to dismantle them.

The (George W) Bush administration too came in for strong criticism for considering former President Pervez Musharraf an "ally in fighting terrorism" and giving billions of dollars to it without any condition that the money should be used to fight terrorists.

The panelists recalled that Musharraf was responsible for aiding Lashkar-e-Taiba to fight in Kashmir during his years in army and Rushdie said he put up a western face to the Westerns but was mullah to extremists.

Rushdie as also other participants strongly attacked noted author Arundhiti Roy for linking the Mumbai terrorist attacks to Kashmir, Gujarat riots and demolition of Babri Masjid.

Usa: India prepara blitz aereo in Pakistan


Gli Stati Uniti sostengono che le forze aeree dell'India si stiano preparando per un possibile attacco contro il Pakistan a breve termine. Una missione in risposta al recente massacro di Mumbai. Tre ufficiali del Pentagono hanno individualmente confermato che l'amministrazione Usa ha informazioni attendibili sul fatto che l'India abbia già cominciato a preparare i suoi avieri a una possibile missione. L'aviazione indiana, secondo i militari Usa, sarebbe già "in stato di allerta". I rapporti diplomatici tra le due potenze nucleari asiatiche sono molto tesi dopo gli attentati di Mumbai. Secondo le fonti, obiettivo del blitz aereo indiano sarebbero i sospetti campi di addestramento dei terroristi in Pakistan. Il portavoce dell'Air Force pachistana Homayoon Ziqar non ha commentato la notizia: Ha solo detto che l'aviazione pachistana, al momento, non è in stato di allerta: "E' tutto normale", ha spiegato. Sabato scorso, secondo il Pentagono, un aereo militare indiano è entrato nello spazio aereo pachistano. Ma l'incursione sarebbe stata non programmata. Frutto di una "disattenzione" del pilota, secondo gli americani.

Sherry calls for avoiding airspace violations
ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman on Tuesday said the current situation called for a need to exercise more diligence to avoid airspace violations of any kind.

She was talking to a private television channel on a discussion on airspace violations. “War is not a solution to the present crisis,” she said. She said, “We are confident that as responsible states, both Pakistan and India will eschew recourse to any use or threat of use of force.”

The minister said the concerns of the two countries should be addressed through dialogue. “However Pakistan is fully prepared to defend itself against any aggression.” Responding to a query on reported Amir Ajmal Kasab’s letter to the Pakistani High Commission in India, Sherry denied that the government had received any such letter, and said that India had not shared with Pakistan any information, or evidence of the origins of the Mumbai terrorists.

The minister said Pakistan had taken all necessary actions to meet its international obligations after the listing of JuD on the Al-Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee under Security Council resolution 1267, which included freezing of JuD assets.

Rejecting notions of India’s intention to carry out surgical strikes against Pakistan, Sherry said any use of force was unthinkable. “Pakistan is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” she said. “The larger interest of peace in the region requires restraint and responsibility.”

NEW DELHI - Il governo dell'India ha invitato i propri cittadini a non recarsi in Pakistan per ragioni di sicurezza, mentre cresce la tensione tra le due potenze nucleari, dopo gli attentati di Mumbai. L'avvertimento è stato lanciato dal ministero degli Esteri di New Delhi mentre era in corso una riunione tra il premier Manmohan Singh e i vertici delle forze armate.

E intanto i due Paesi ammassano truppe al confine. Il Pakistan, ha riferito una fonte delle forze armate, ha trasferito truppe dal confine con l'Afghanistan a quello con l'India e ha sospeso tutte le licenze ai militari con compiti "operativi".

Fonti militari pakistane sostengono al contrario che è stato notato uno spostamento di truppe indiane verso la frontiera, poco distante dalla città di Lahore.

Paradossalmente l'innalzamento della tensione arriva proprio mentre nel Kashmir indiano si chiude il più tranquillo degli ultimi 20 anni, a conferma della distensione avviata nel 2004. Anche se nella regione opera ancora un migliaio di guerriglieri islamici, il numero di scontri a fuoco nel 2008 è sceso a 700, con un calo del 40%.
