An Afghan gangster who trafficked children into the UK before they were raped and blackmailed will be extradited to Belgium to serve a 10 year jail sentence.

Saifur Ahmedzai, 23, was arrested by specialist National Crime Agency extradition officers in Hertfordshire last December.

It was part of a joint crackdown with Belgian authorities on a sick gang who would film themselves raping young migrants so they could use the footage to blackmail the victims.

Ahmedzai along with Ziarmal Khan, 24, and Zeeshan Bangash, 20, were finally caught in the UK and convicted alongside 21 other gang members for a total of 170 years, with sentences ranging from two to 18 years.

Ahmedzai was jailed for ten years in his absence in Antwerp last November while Khan and Bangash were each locked up for three years.

His gang was involved in organising the transport of thousands of migrants from Afghanistan through Iran, Turkey and the Balkans into Europe including France and Belgium.

Wearing a prison issue grey tracksuit, Ahmedzai appeared in the dock assisted by an Afghan interpreter speaking only to confirm his name and date of birth.

District judge John Zani ordered he be 'surrendered to Belgium to serve the sentence of imprisonment imposed.'

Ahmedzai was emotionless as he heard the decision.

Many would be put on small boats from northern France to the UK, with the gang suspected of transporting thousands of people this way.

NCA investigators have supported the Belgian investigation for around two years.

They supplied intelligence and evidence to the Belgian Federal Police around suspected members of the network.

Eleven members were tried in their absence, including the three men arrested in the UK.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, earlier said: 'This case is nothing short of sickening. These men ran extensive illegal smuggling operations and inflicted extreme cruelty on the migrants they smuggled - some of them children - when they were at their most vulnerable.

'I am grateful to the NCA, Border Force and Immigration Enforcement officers, for their hard work and dedication in pursuing these vile criminal gangs, safeguarding victims of exploitation and protecting our borders.

'As part of the Government's Plan for Change to strengthen our borders, we are working ever more closely with international partners to track down dangerous criminal networks like these, disrupt their activities and ensure they face the full force of the law, to protect people and save lives.

'In recent weeks we've agreed landmark new deals with Iraq and Germany, pledging mutual support and co-operation to tackle this shared challenge. At the Calais Group meeting with European partners too, we agreed to enhance our joint efforts to end this dangerous trade.

'Through this closer international collaboration, joint work between law enforcement agencies, new legislation, and the £150 million cash investment in the Border Security Command, we are making clear we will stop at nothing to protect our borders from people-smuggling gangs.'

BAMAKO, Mali — An attack by a jihadi group in northern Burkina Faso killed more than 100 people, mostly soldiers, an aid worker and local residents said Monday.

The attack on several locations, including a military base and the long besieged strategic town of Djibo, occurred early Sunday, said an aid worker actively involved in dialogues in Burkina Faso’s hard-hit communities. A student from the area said her father was among those killed.

Both individuals spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on the condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisals.

A jihadi group aligned with Al-Qaida known as Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin, or JNIM, which is active in the Sahel region, claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack.

Run by a military junta, the landlocked nation of 23 million has been among the worst hit by the security crisis in Africa’s Sahel region, known as the global hot spot for violent extremism. About half of Burkina Faso is outside of government control as a result of the violence that contributed to two coups in 2022. Government security forces have also been accused of extrajudicial killings.

The aid worker, as well as Charlie Werb, an independent analyst focusing on the Sahel, recounted how Sunday’s attack began simultaneously in different locations at 6 a.m. local time on Sunday.


“JNIM fighters attacked eight localities simultaneously to disperse the Burkina Faso air force. The main attack occurred in Djibo, where JNIM fighters first took control of all the town’s entry checkpoints before attacking the military camps, particularly the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit’s camp,” said the aid worker.

Werb, who studied videos posted online, said the attackers spent several hours in the areas without air support from Burkina Faso’s military, unlike similar attacks on Djibo in the past, when security forces have successfully repelled the extremists.

The latest attack shows JNIM’s escalating power and widening reach in Burkina Faso, said Wassim Nasr, a Sahel specialist and senior research fellow at the Soufan Center security think tank. “The fact that Djibo was targeted confirms the extent of JNIM’s freedom of movement within Burkina Faso.”

Analysts have warned that the junta’s strategy of military escalation, including the mass recruitment of civilians into poorly trained militias, has worsened inter-ethnic tensions.

Ex-Muslim author and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali has urged Australia to learn the lessons from Europe’s failures, abandon multiculturalism, and get tough on radical Islamism.

The Somali-born former refugee, former member of the Dutch parliament and critic of Islam, spoke to Sky News Australia on Thursday, telling Peta Credlin that the social cohesion problems Australia was facing were the same as those being faced around the Western world.

“The problem you're seeing in Australia is exactly the same problem they have in the United Kingdom, in Germany, in other parts of Europe, and we also have it in the United States”, she said.

Ms Ali pointed to the philosophy of multiculturalism as a major cause of the problem, claiming it allowed immigrants to settle in Western countries, gain citizenship, and only integrate on their own terms.

“Unfortunately, the result of that for some of these immigrants, not all of them, but for some of these immigrants, was to form their own ghettos,” she said.

“Enter radical Islam, which is an international ideology that seeks to transform everywhere it goes and tries to take over control and power.

“The philosophy of multiculturalism empowered the Islamists into isolating Muslim individuals, convincing them that the Islamist worldview is their worldview, and that that is what it is to be a Muslim, and turning them against the local populations."

The ex-Mulsim author, who claimed asylum in the Netherlands and went on to be elected as a member of the Dutch Parliament, said that the West needed to realise that "multiculturalism as a philosophy has failed".

"If you want to bring about social cohesion in a nation state, you emphasise what unites us, you don't emphasise what divides us. And multiculturalism is about emphasizing what divides us," she said.

“And the way multiculturalism works is some of these communities (are)… afforded exemptions from the laws that majorities have to uphold.”

Ms Ali said Australia needed to realise it was a nation state with roots in Christianity, with a Christian morality, and with its own constitution, customs, rituals, and norms - and that this needed to be emphasised.

“If you want to invite people in from outside of Australia, to settle and live in Australia and to belong, I think it's very important to have the conversation with them that this is the place you're coming to,” she said.

“(Tell them) here's what Australia is all about, and in order to belong, you are going to adhere to our norms… But if you don't want to adhere to our norms, it's fine. We believe in freedom, but you don't get to live here.”

Ms Ali said that as a result of many Middle Eastern countries having cracked down on radical Islamism in the years since the Arab Spring, groups like the Muslim Brotherhood were now choosing to base themselves in Western societies.

“In the original countries of Islam, Islamism is out. They've then migrated, and they've come to Western societies that pride themselves in freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and so on,” she said.

“And so they've set up shop here, and they've decided they're going to start the Islamisation process, or they're going to headquarter the Islamist project from the UK, and from France, and from Germany, and in this case, from Australia."
