The Taliban’s vice and virtue department in Herat has ordered male United Nations employees to refrain from coming to work without beards, sources within the UN in Herat told Amu.

According to the sources, Taliban officials visited the Islam Qala center in Herat on Saturday afternoon (February 8) and warned male employees that shaving or trimming their beards would result in imprisonment.

This directive follows previous bans on beard trimming in government institutions and academic environments, reflecting the Taliban’s continued enforcement of strict social codes.

The warning comes amid mounting challenges for humanitarian operations in Afghanistan. In December, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported significant access constraints in November, with 164 incidents recorded—a 56 percent increase from October and an 11 percent rise compared to the same period in 2022.

The report stated that 99 percent of these incidents were attributed to actions by the Taliban. The Southern, Central Highlands, Western, and Central regions accounted for 67 percent of the cases. These challenges disrupted aid delivery, leading to the temporary suspension of 72 projects, the permanent halt of two initiatives, and the closure of one facility.

Anti-Jewish passages in Syrian textbooks will remain under the new HTS-led regime, which has announced Islamist updates to the curriculum, according to an education watchdog.

Directives from Syria’s education ministry last month set the tone of classroom instruction under the new regime. According to the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (Impact-se), which has analysed the announced changes, anti-Jewish sentiment will remain in the books and an increasingly Islamist perspective will be introduced.

Education Minister al-Qadiri has stated in the media that the proposed changes are limited to inaccuracies in Islamic Education, but in their 50-page report, Impact-se has found the changes are more extensive.

Based on a list of planned alterations to school textbooks, one former reference in a book aimed at six to seven-year-olds to "those who have gone astray from the path of goodness" will be replaced with more explicit wording, referencing "the Jews and Christians”.

“This change introduces an overtly negative portrayal of Jews and Christians to young, impressionable students,” Impact-se said in their report.

Other extracts in textbooks depict Jews and Zionists with a reference to “global dominance,” according to the watchdog.

A history textbook for 15 – 16-year-olds describes Jews as adhering to the “extremist idea” that they are “God’s chosen people,” presenting Judaism as “ethnically exclusive”.

Another textbook describes Zionism as a "racist and expansionist" worldview, which “believes that all the world's resources must be employed to serve the Zionist Entity and protect it.”

Anti-Israel content is set to remain in textbooks under the new changes.

A primary level Arabic textbook will continue to portray Palestinian terrorist Dalal al-Mughrabi as a hero. Mughrabi is notorious for the 1978 Coastal Road bus attack that killed 38 Israeli civilians, including 13 children.

Boko Haram militants raided Christian communities in the northeastern part of Nigeria last week, displacing more than 1,500 people.

During the early morning raid in the villages of Shikarkir and Yirmirmug, the militants, aspiring to institute an Islamic caliphate, threatened Christians that if they refused to convert to Islam, they would face death. The militants killed eight Christians and destroyed 57 homes. A church known as Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa was ravaged, as well as food supplies, livelihood and livestock, International Christian Concern (ICC) reported.

It is the latest in a surge of attacks in Borno state, Nigeria, that has displaced some 4,000 people in total. Pastor Yarakawa Mutah, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Chibok, explained that Boko Haram militants, officially known as Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, choose to target Christian communities.

“Even if there is a mosque, they don’t burn the mosque,” Mutah said. “They only burn Christian houses and churches.”

An unnamed source recalled the attack.

“The attackers burn down houses, food barns and whatever they find belonging to Christians, leaving those owned by Muslims,” the source told ICC.

Ibrahim Yana, a farmer, fled Shikarkir.

“We are living in fear,” Yana said. “They burned down our church and homes. Many of us have lost everything.”

Using violent insurgence, the militants’ brutality has increased since 2009. In 2014, the group gained the spotlight for abducting 275 schoolgirls in Chibok, sparking local and international outrage and fear.

Over the last two decades, tens of millions of Nigerians have been displaced, and over 60,000 Christians have been killed by the militants. Displaced Nigerians are often sent to refugee camps. Living in the camps’ conditions, women and children often fall prey to human trafficking and health issues.

Nigeria is the deadliest country to be Christian, according to Open Doors’ World Watch List 2024. The data report records that of the Christians killed for their faith in 2024, 82% of them were in Nigeria. More Christians are killed in Nigeria than in all other countries combined. Yet, the Biden State Department in 2021 withdrew Nigeria from the Countries of Particular Concern list, a record of countries that severely infringe upon religious freedom.

In 2024 alone, 4,998 Christians were killed for their faith. Nigeria has the largest number of people abducted for faith reasons. Open Doors’ report records a total of 3,906 Christians abducted for their faith. More than 21,000 houses and properties of Christians were “attacked, damaged, bombed, looted, destroyed, burned down or confiscated,” and 278,716 Christians were forced to hide in country or leave their homes for faith-related reasons.

In 2020, Swedish state media painted Ali Salum and his Syrian refugee family as an example of successful integration. Five years later, the now 15-year-old is on trial for attempted murder, accused of shooting a classmate in the head inside a school toilet at Trångsund School in Huddinge.

The trial, which began on Thursday, is expected to last three days, concluding on Jan. 22. Salum is charged with attempted murder, preparation for murder, and aggravated weapons offenses.

The charges pertain to an incident in September last year when a gunshot was fired from inside a school restroom resulting in serious injury to one 15-year-old victim who was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. Despite being shot in the head, with the bullet passing through his nose and lodging in his neck, the victim miraculously survived.
