One person has been killed and five police officers injured in a knife attack in the eastern French city of Mulhouse.

A 37-year-old Algerian man was arrested at the scene and the prosecutor has opened a terrorist inquiry because the suspect reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar", or "God is great".

The man injured two police officers seriously, one in the neck and one in the chest. A 69-year-old Portuguese man who tried to intervene was stabbed and killed.

The suspect was subject to a deportation order because he was on a terrorism watch list, according to the local prosecutor. President Emmanuel Macron said there was "no doubt it was an Islamist terrorist attack".

After expressing his condolences to the family of the victim, Macron added: "I want to reiterate the determination of the government, and mine, to continue the work to eradicate terrorism on our soil."

The attack took place at about 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT) on Saturday near a busy market in Mulhouse, which is close to the borders with Germany and Switzerland.

The police officers were on patrol at a demonstration taking place in support of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Berlin stabbing suspect planned to kill Jewish people, police believe

A 19-year-old Syrian man suspected of stabbing a Spanish tourist at Berlin's Holocaust Memorial had planned for several weeks to kill Jewish people, Berlin police believe.

The attack took place on Friday evening, with the assailant approaching the 30-year-old victim from behind before stabbing him and fleeing the scene.

A man was arrested nearby after police noticed blood stains on his hands and clothing.

The suspect was carrying a prayer rug, a copy of the Quran, and the suspected weapon in his backpack, suggesting "a religious motivation", police said.

After being taken to hospital with serious wounds to his neck, the victim underwent an operation and was put into an induced coma, but his life is no longer in danger.

Police say they are examining possible connections to the current Middle East conflict - but said there is currently no evidence of links to any groups or individuals.

They are also investigating whether the suspect is suffering from mental illness. He had no prior criminal record and was not known to the police, they added.

Six people who witnessed the attack are receiving counselling from local authorities.

More than a quarter of primary school teachers have staged terror drills as schools try to defend themselves from pupils or intruders carrying knives.

Teachers are practising American-style lockdowns, where children are told to hide under their desk and remain silent while the blinds are lowered.

Thirty-six per cent of secondary school teachers and 26 per cent of primary school teachers have performed a drill since September, a survey of 6,950 teachers by the Teacher Tapp app revealed.

Meanwhile, three percent of teachers have been involved in real lockdowns since the beginning of the academic year.

Last week, Llanwern High School, a Welsh secondary school was put into lockdown after an 'unknown individual' entered the site.

Head teacher Damian Lawlor said the lockdown process was followed fully and was removed shortly afterwards when the individual had left the site.

Last month police were called to Newport High School after a former pupil attacked three members of staff.

And on Friday, hundreds turned out for the funeral of teenager Harvey Willgoose, 15, who died after being stabbed inside All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield earlier this month.

A 15-year-old boy, who can't be named due to his age, has been charged with murder, possession of a bladed article and one count of affray.

He will appear at Sheffield Crown Court on April 28 and a trial has been provisionally set for June 30.

Police spokesperson Stefan Wilhelm said that one person was killed and “several” others were injured when a driver drove a black SUV into a group of people in Paradeplatz, a pedestrianized street in downtown Mannheim

“We can confirm that one perpetrator was arrested,” he said. “We can’t yet give information on whether there were further perpetrators.”

Paradeplatz, a major square in the downtown area, lies at the end of a pedestrianized street in Mannheim, which has a population of 326,000 and lies 85 kilometres south of Frankfurt.

Police are appealing to the public to avoid the area.

The incident occurred as crowds gathered in cities across western Germany’s Rhineland for parades to mark the carnival season.

Security has been a key concern in Germany following a string of violent attacks in recent weeks, including deadly car rammings in Magdeburg in December and in Munich last month, as well as a stabbing in Mannheim in May 2024.

Police are on high alert for this year’s carnival parades after social media accounts connected to the Islamic State (IS) group called for attacks on the events in Cologne and Nuremberg.
