The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) has revealed the underlying cause behind the recent shooting that targeted Buddhist monks and novices in Saba Yoi district, Songkhla province, resulting in the death of one novice and injuries to two others.
The attack occurred on Tuesday (April 22) morning, when assailants opened fire on a 4-door pickup truck driven by Pol Lt Watthana Chumapan, a police officer from Saba Yoi Police Station. The vehicle was transporting six monks and novices on their morning alms round.

Novice monk Wongsakorn, 16, Watthana’s son, succumbed to his injuries, while novice monk Phokanit, 12, and senior monk Boonsong, 70, sustained minor injuries.

Lt Gen Surathep Nukaew, Director of Coordination Centre 5 under ISOC, on Wednesday revealed that the shooting could be linked to a recent wave of violence targeting civilians in the Southern region.

According to Surathep, the violence stems from the April 18 shooting of Abdulroning Latheh, a former ustaz (Islamic teacher), in Su-Ngai Kolok district, Narathiwat province. Following his death, misinformation spread rapidly through both word-of-mouth and online channels associated with separatist movements, alleging state involvement due to Latheh’s past record with security agencies.

"After Latheh was shot, false narratives quickly emerged blaming the authorities," explained Surathep. “This misinformation campaign was part of an internal rift within the BRN separatist movement — a power struggle between old and new leadership factions. The conflict led to retaliatory attacks, particularly targeting Buddhists, as a provocative response.”

While some BRN leaders reportedly disagreed with these violent tactics, the spread of rumors triggered immediate retaliatory operations, including the shooting of monks and novices at Wat Guhra in Saba Yoi, Songkhla province, and attacks in Waeng district, Narathiwat province.

Regarding the bomb attack on April 20 near the fence of Khok Khian Police Station in Narathiwat, which injured several Muslim students, ISOC believes it was likely a mistake. Such incidents harm the militants' public support, and the group has since faced condemnation from multiple parties.

Desecrations of churches unsettle Germany

2025 in Mayence: Holy water font contaminated with faeces. Confessionals destroyed. Easter candles were smeared in Kraichgau. Unknown persons smashed the high altar in Öhringen. A Bible was set on fire in Groß-Gerau. Crosses were desecrated in Eslohe. In Neuss-Erfttal, the police are investigating arson. In Salzgitter-Bad, perpetrators destroyed a statue of the Virgin Mary. Several churches were vandalised in the Odenwald.
Churches have an ‘open day’ every day. Anyone can enter the room of silence. No one checks. This Christian tradition is an expression of trust. Even those who despise Christianity take advantage of it. Figures of saints were stolen from churches as long as 50 years ago. They were later found in second-hand bookshops. But today it is no longer about theft. It is about destruction and deliberate desecration.
Crosses are smashed, statues are knocked off their pedestals and smashed on the floor. Baptismal fonts are damaged. Altars are desecrated. The misguided perpetrators believe that they are serving their religion when they desecrate the Christian house of God. Magdeburg Cathedral was locked when the author tried to enter it in 2019.
A member of the congregation reported that someone had been defecating behind the altar.

According to the OIDAC report, over 2,000 anti-church acts were recorded across Europe in 2023, ranging from vandalism and desecration to threats. In Bavaria alone, the number of church desecrations rose from 219 (2019) to 294 (2022). In Baden-Württemberg, 896 offences against church facilities were reported in 2023. This corresponds to an increase of six per cent. The number of violent offences rose by 56 per cent. In North Rhine-Westphalia: 354 cases in 2019, 440 in 2023. In Berlin, attacks on Christian places of worship have totalled over 1,400 since 2006.

And these are just the official figures. The official statistics only list politically motivated offences. However, many desecrations are classed as ‘vandalism’ and fall under the heading of general crime. Observers speak of unreported offences. On X, users reported over 90 targeted attacks in spring 2025 alone. However, the Ministry of the Interior is playing down.

In some cases, perpetrators shout ‘Allahu Akbar’. The slogans are clear. Islamist groups such as the so-called IS have been calling for the destruction of Christian sites for years. Young men, ideologically incited, act on this appeal. They despise the Christian cross and make it their target. It is a sad country where churches remain open and unprotected.

The parishes are not asking for much, just that their places of worship are safe and that perpetrators are punished. That people take a close look and protect what generations have built up. But there is a lack of cameras. There is a lack of police patrols and a lack of honesty. Instead: Trivialisation. Silence.

Germany must protect its churches before it is too late. A cross is not a piece of wood. An altar is not a piece of furniture. A church is not a public space like any other. It is a sanctuary, a place of refuge and a place of prayer. Anyone who attacks it is attacking us all.

A country that no longer defends its churches has ceased to love itself. The perpetrators feel they are right and continue to destroy.

Two teenagers who arrived in the country from Pakistan have been detained on suspicion of arson.

In the city of Port Talbot (Wales), the police arrested two migrants from Pakistan on suspicion of deliberately setting fire to a church.

As local press reports, the fire occurred on Thursday evening, April 24, in a Methodist chapel building on Station Road in the city center.

Two teenagers, aged 14 and 15, who arrived in the country from Pakistan, were detained on suspicion of arson. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Fire crews from Port Talbot, Swansea, and Neath arrived at the scene at 18:49 local time. It took several hours to extinguish the fire, which was fully brought under control only in the early hours of Friday, April 25.

According to the Mid and West Wales Fire Service, the church building was seriously damaged by the fire.

Three dead as protests against Muslim land law turn violent in eastern India

KOLKATA, India (Reuters) - Protesters angered by a new law on land use they say discriminates against Muslims set fire to police vehicles in Kolkata, capital of India's West Bengal State, on Monday after a weekend of violence claimed three lives, authorities said.

The unrest began in the Murshidabad district, where Muslim protesters set fire to shopping malls, attacked a Hindu home and stabbed two people on Saturday, police said, forcing authorities to suspend internet services in the area.

On Monday, protesters in the Bhangar area of Kolkata clashed with police after officers stopped a protest rally. A major highway was blocked by protesters during the disturbances.

The protesters were angry about a new law passed by the Indian parliament this month, which makes sweeping changes in the management of vast tracts of land set aside solely for Muslim use, potentially stoking tensions between the government and minority Muslims.

Muslim groups and political parties say the law, like many of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies, aims to alienate and discriminate against Muslims. Modi and officials in his party deny the allegations, and have said the law is a "pro-Muslim reform".

Modi's party has accused the Trinamool Congress, its bitter rival which rules West Bengal, of appeasing Muslims in order to win votes. The Trinamool Congress denies this and says Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party is polarising people on religious lines.

A slew of antisemitic social media posts attributed to a Gazan journalist who regularly contributes to BBC Arabic were uncovered on Saturday, including one in which he called to “burn the Jews as Hitler did.”

Samer Elzaenen, 33, was uploading antisemitic and anti-Israel content to social media as far back as 2011, The Telegraph revealed, and continued even after he began providing correspondence for BBC Arabic in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led onslaught in southern Israel and the start of the Gaza war.

In a Facebook post in 2011, Elzaenen wrote: “My message to the Zionist Jews: We are going to take our land back, we love death for Allah’s sake, the same way you love life. We shall burn you as Hitler did, but this time we won’t have a single one of you left.”






Then, more than a decade later in 2022, he wrote: “When things go awry for us, shoot the Jews, it fixes everything.”

According to the British newspaper, Elzaenen has praised over 30 separate terror attacks against Israeli civilians, including a February 2023 car-ramming attack that killed two boys and a 20-year-old man in Jerusalem.
In the aftermath of the October 7 assault, in which some 1,200 people were killed, mostly civilians, and 251 were seized as hostages, Elzaenen praised the Hamas “resistance fighters” who led the onslaught.

According to the Telegraph, Elzaenen has appeared on BBC Arabic more than a dozen times since the start of the war in Gaza, which erupted when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists burst through the border into Israel on October 7, 2023, killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and seized 251 hostages.

Elzaenen subsequently praised the “resistance fighters” who led the massacres.

In the same report, the Telegraph also uncovered remarks posted on social media by a second freelance reporter and correspondent for BBC Arabic, Ahmed Qannan, who praised the “hero” terrorist who opened fire in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak in March 2022, killing five people.

The Telegraph said that the two journalists’ social media posts were unearthed by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA).

In response to the uncovered social media posts, a BBC spokesperson told the Telegraph that Elzaenen and Qannan are not employees of the company. Rather, the spokesperson said, the BBC uses “a range of eyewitness accounts from the Strip,” since its journalists are not allowed to enter amid the war.

“These are not BBC members of staff or part of the BBC’s reporting team,” the spokesperson said. “We were not aware of the individuals’ social media activity prior to hearing from them on air. We are absolutely clear that there is no place for antisemitism on our services.”

The BBC has faced heavy scrutiny over the past 18 months for what many perceive to be an anti-Israel slant to its coverage of the war in Gaza.

In February, the news service was forced to apologize after it emerged that a new documentary titled “Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone” had been narrated by the son of Hamas’s former deputy minister of agriculture.

BBC chair Samir Shah said at the time that the documentary was a “dagger to the heart” of the broadcaster’s impartiality, and vowed that “appropriate action” would be taken.

Amid the backlash over the documentary, Shah was pulled into a meeting with UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who stressed to the public that “no stone will be left unturned” when investigating how the documentary came to be.

More widely, the BBC has been criticized for its refusal to describe Hamas as terrorists, even though the group’s military wing is proscribed by the United Kingdom as such, and even after the widespread documentation of its systematic targeting of civilians on October 7, 2023.

A spokesperson for the news service has previously said that it avoids labeling any group as terrorists unless quoting remarks by others, as it is a charged word, and thus goes against the broadcaster’s efforts at objective reporting.
