Geneva is unfortunately not much good for seeing wide-bodies. Right now, we only get a Swissair A330 daily, plus some Iran Air, Kuwaiti, and Saudi heavies on a regular weekly basis. If you like to see things bigger than 737s or A320s, GVA is probably not for you.

Geneva can be quite interesting for small airlines, charters (because of the nearby mountains), and government flights (because of the UN headquarters, and also it allows government officials to visit their Swiss bank accounts). Special flights are fairly common. Last year the Saudi crown prince came on a visit to Geneva, and his entourage consisted of a pair of 747s, an MD-11, a 737 and a 727, all in Saudia colors.

If you want to come here to shoot some pics, don't come in between December and March. There is a kind of "microclimate" here which makes sunny days in the winter as common as yellow elephants. The rest of the year is pretty good, although spring can be dicey.

Shooting from the tarmac is out of the question, unless you work there. The terminal viewing deck sucks, as they have installed bad-quality plexiglass all around it. But there are a number of good spotting sites at either end of the single runway, so good landing and taxiway shots are no problem. Unfortunately, there is no really good spot near the middle of the 12,000 ft. runway, so good takeoff shots are almost impossible, unless a plane uses 9 or 10 thousand feet of runway, and takes off on runway 05 (I've never seen it, but apparently it happens)

It can be busy with bizjets during the Geneva motor show, held in the first weeks of March.

There is an observationdeck.(closed at the moment (April 1998). Near the cargo area is a hill from where photographs can be taken.

A comprehensive description of photospot is at DPTS Association website

-If the active runway is 23 (which it is, most of the time), there's a good spot in the morning near the entrance to the tunnel that goes under the runway and to France (follow signs to Ferney). Just before the tunnel entrance, take a left and park. You'll see an access road that leads towards the cargo area; right above it is a hill from the top of which you'll have a good view of aircraft taxiing to or using runway 23. In the afternoon, though, you'll be backlit, so you'll want to go to...

-The restaurant near the aeroclub. Drive around the airport toward Meyrin, take the first right just after the airport, and then the first right again. The road will take you through fields (with the airport to your right) and then lead you straight to the aeroclub. The restaurant is a wooden shack, and has outside tables on the side facing the runway (opposite side from where you park). This spot is opposite the main terminal and should work whichever runway is in use, although smaller aircraft landing on 23 may turn off the runway before they come into range. Light is good for photography from about 3:00. This is also a good spot for biz-jets, since most park at the Aeroleasing hangar near the Aeroclub.

-Another spot you can use in the morning if runway 5 is in use is right along the threshold of runway 5. There's a bike and footpath that runs along the main road across the approach to runway 5. Good spot for landing shots, but shots of aircraft taxiing out for takeoff are difficult because of a barbed wire fence and an earth berm. It's also not so good in the afternoon because the road pattern makes it difficult to stand far enough back from the runway to get shots side-on. This area is about a 1-1.5km walk from the main terminal, if you're up to it. Just exit the terminal and head to the left, then take another left on the first major road where that's possible (after all the hangars and other installations).

    Places to stay:
As Switserland is a very expensive country, it is better to search for a hotel in France, which is close to Geneve.

A youthhostel in Geneva is very cheap, about 40 Swiss Francs a night (summer 2000). Rue 30 Rothschild 1202 Geneva tel 22 736260 fax 22 7383987

A double room in a hotel just across the airport costs about 195 French Francs.

Near the generall aviation are a Novotel, a Campanille hotel and a F1 hotel.

    Ciao!

    Fai bene, è molto bella.
Buon divertimento e mi raccomando compra tanto cioccolato.

Sul cioccolato non sto scherzando: in Svizzera è buono e non costa molto, non è un luogo comune ....
