Prodi quick-hits for the cycle
It takes more than hoping to rid cycling of doping.
So believes Italian Premier and cycling enthusiast Romano Prodi.
''Sport means starting from a level playing field in health, respecting the rules and control of the rules,'' Prodi said in Tuesday's editions of La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
''There are two roads. The first is legislative.''
The second: a change in ''the sport's culture, in terms of practice and values.''
The problem is some cyclists value winning more than staying free of performance-enhancing substances.
Prodi steered clear of this year's Tour de France after Italian Ivan Basso, one of the favorites, was banned from competing because he was among nine riders implicated in a Spanish doping probe.
''Basso had convinced me,'' Prodi said. ''He had the legs and the head to be able to win the Tour. The doping incident ... disappointed me profoundly. Basso was the image of the clean athlete. Italian cycling was being built around him.''
Which would make the rider a Basso profundo disappointmento. Or something like that.
