Police Report Confirms Gibson's Tirade

LOS ANGELES -- An official police report on Mel Gibson's arrest on drunken driving charges substantiates claims that he made anti-Semitic remarks and threatened a deputy, a law enforcement official said Monday.

Meanwhile, Gibson's publicist confirmed to the Associated Press that the actor is participating in an ongoing program to deal with his alcoholism.

On Monday, Sheriff's Department officials sent prosecutors their case, which also says a tequila bottle was found in Gibson's car when he was pulled over on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Gibson had released a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for saying "despicable" things to sheriff's deputies when he was arrested, but he did not elaborate. The entertainment Web site TMZ.com had reported that the sheriff's department was considering eliminating the anti-Semitic remarks from its official report.

The report forwarded to prosecutors cites Gibson as making disparaging comments about Jews, according to the law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The district attorney's office confirmed prosecutors had received the case and it was under review. A tentative arraignment date was set for Sept. 28.

A sheriff's spokesman Monday defended the department's handling of the case.

"In that case file will be (Gibson's) statement, will be our report, will be everything pertinent to his blood-alcohol level. We have done our job," sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told reporters Monday at department headquarters. "We hope we've done it with not only professionalism and intelligence, but held to the highest standard of legal and moral imperative."

The Sheriff's Department, he said, was "convinced because of our investigation and because of his own self-illuminating statement that he will be convicted of driving under the influence."

In his statement, Gibson said he has struggled with alcoholism and taken steps "to ensure my return to health."

The actor was "participating in an ongoing program to deal with this," Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob told The Associated Press on Monday. "The guy is trying to stay alive."

Deputy Mee then wrote an eight-page report detailing Gibson's rampage and comments. Sources say the sergeant on duty felt it was too "inflammatory." A lieutenant and captain then got involved and calls were made to Sheriff's headquarters. Sources say Mee was told Gibson's comments would incite a lot of "Jewish hatred," that the situation in Israel was "way too inflammatory." It was mentioned several times that Gibson, who wrote, directed, and produced 2004's "The Passion of the Christ," had incited "anti-Jewish sentiment" and "For a drunk driving arrest, is this really worth all that?"

"The Anti-Defamation League, which was critical of the portrayal of Jews in "The Passion of the Christ," called Gibson's statement "unremorseful and insufficient."

"It's not a proper apology because it does not go to the essence of his bigotry," said Abraham H. Foxman, the group's national director, in a written statement."

ABC announced late Monday that it had scrapped plans for Gibson to produce a miniseries on the Holocaust.

"This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have," Gibson said.

To some people, however, it is about movies.

"I don't think I want to see any more Mel Gibson movies," Barbara Walters said Monday on the ABC talk show "The View." ABC is owned by Disney, which was in the early stages of planning the marketing for Gibson's next film "Apocalypto."

This is not the first time Gibson has faced accusations of anti-Semitism.

Gibson produced, directed and financed the 2004 blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," which some Jewish leaders said cast Jews as the killers of Jesus. Days before "Passion" was released, Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, was quoted as saying the Holocaust was mostly "fiction."

Alcuni opinionisti americani dicono che le scuse non bastano. Mel Gibson ha sbagliato e deve pagare. E i produttori di origine ebraica, e anche gli altri se ci sono, di Hollywood non devono dargli una seconda opportunità.

Se avesse detto: “Israele è responsabile della guerra in Libano”, oppure: “Israele con il suo comportamento può fare scoppiare la terza guerra mondiale” forse avrebbero riaperto Alcatraz solo per lui e buttato via le chiavi. Israele fa paura. Il suo comportamento è irresponsabile. Ecco, l’ho detto. E non sono neppure ubriaco. Sono solo spaventato per i miei figli. Come forse siamo un po’ tutti. Lo so, Veltroni mi metterà al bando da Cinecittà. Dietro Israele ci sono gli Stati Uniti o dietro gli Stati Uniti c’è Israele, chi è la causa e chi l’effetto? I giornali di tutti i Paesi musulmani hanno in prima pagina le foto di bambini libanesi bruciati. Il Mediterraneo è un mare di odio. In Italia siamo pieni di ordigni nucleari statunitensi. Per proteggerci meglio dicono. Ma io non voglio più essere protetto da questa gente. E se la scusa è la Nato, fuori dalla Nato e i cow boy a casa loro.

Grillo sbaglia una cosa sola. A Hollywood, i produttori sono tutti ebrei in un modo o l'altro.

NEW YORK - Comedian Joy Behar is suggesting a painful way for Mel Gibson to show he's sorry.


Behar said on "The View" that Gibson "needs to be welcomed into the Jewish community by a public circumcision."

Behar says Gibson's apology won't change him. She says "people like him have it in them to just hate."

Earlier this week, Barbara Walters had said she'd never see another Gibson movie again, and she says his second apology hasn't changed her mind.
