7.05pm Tories fight back
The Tories have rapidly upped their game. George Osborne says they will make a "final offer" to the Liberal Democrats of a referendum on the alternative vote system (which the Tories would presumably campaign against).
The Lib Dems called their bluff, and they've caved - equalling a longstanding aspect of Labour's offer.
Mr Osborne said this had been put to the parliamentary Conservative party at their meeting and no one had objected.
He added it was "not in the interests of the country to have an unelected leader".
