More Swedes want to abolish monarchy
The Novus Opinions poll, conducted for the Swedish Republican Association, showed 58 percent of Swedes still favour the royal family, but also indicated that opposition to the monarchy has more than doubled in the past decade.
Twenty-eight percent of the 1,000 people questioned April 15-20 said they thought the monarchy should be abolished, compared to just 12 percent 10 years earlier, said the poll, published on King Carl XVI Gustaf's 64th birthday.
"People are just getting fed up with the monarchy," Mona Abou-Jeib Broshammar, who leads the Rupublican Association, told AFP.
"If the development continues in the same direction as over the past decade, I think that in Sweden there will be a majority for abolishing the monarchy by 2024."
She said she believed that widespread coverage of the 32-year-old crown princess's upcoming marriage to luxury fitness club owner Daniel Westling on June 19 appeared to be partly to blame for the increased opposition.
"A lot has been written about how the king has asked the taxpayers to cover his daughter's wedding expenses ... A lot has been written about (the royal family's) VIP treatment, and people are sick of it," she said.
Sweden is a constitutional monarchy, and although the king is considered head of state, he in practice has no political power.
The Expressen tabloid meanwhile published Friday a list of 443 people invited to Crown Princess Victoria's wedding, including royals from across Europe and other international and national dignitaries.
