Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene needs to be clear about what's really at stake in 2024


countering Russia’s power-mad dictator is the right thing to do. Putin’s ambitions will not stop at Ukraine. The next target might well be a NATO ally, which would put U.S. boots on the ground.

Though the war has taken a terrible toll on the valiant people of Ukraine, it has revealed Russia to be vulnerable. If President Biden had allowed an all-out aggressive war against Moscow, we would not be at a seeming stalemate. Because he dithered, Ukraine is now losing ground and urgently needs weapons and ammunition. This can be remedied; we need to provide the funding and push the White House to outline the path to victory.


Last October, other GOP malcontents ejected Kevin McCarthy from the Speakership of the House. It was not a smart or productive move; several House Republicans have since resigned, disgusted by the rancor and self-aggrandizement of those who threw the chamber into convulsions. As a result, what had been a slim majority is now on life support, making governing that much more difficult.


The ouster of the popular McCarthy also torched the public’s view of the GOP. In May 2023, registered voters were evenly split between approving and disapproving of the Republican Party. Today, there is a 25-point gap, with 61% disapproval and 36% approving. That will not help win elections.

The internal squabbles of the party need to stop. If Marjorie Taylor Greene and others want to oppose aid to Ukraine or the FISA bill, they can vote against it. That’s how democracy works.

The Capitol Hill chroniclers at Punchbowl News made a proclamation Monday morning: “The winner of this Congress? Joe Biden.” It’s a remarkable statement, considering Democrats only hold the majority in the Senate. But the “burn it down caucus” in the House GOP has achieved the impossible. They have torched their own congressional majority, leaving themselves a one-seat governing majority in the House of Representatives.

How? Republicans are running for the exits at an alarming clip. Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado left in late March; now Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin is leaving early. “This place just keeps going downhill, and I don’t need to spend my time here,” Buck said, per The Washington Post. But it’s not the place that’s going downhill; it’s that the Republicans are at all-out war with each other. On Saturday, that war hit a fever pitch, when embattled Speaker Mike Johnson was finally able to pass the $94 billion foreign aid package.

The right-wing media industrial complex is sending a message to Greene loud and clear.

The very next day, the cover of the Rupert Murdoch-owned New York Post — Donald Trump’s onetime favorite tabloid — read, “NYET, MOSCOW MARJORIE,” and was emblazoned with a picture of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., in a furry gray ushanka. And Monday, the Post published a column from Piers Morgan, the longtime Murdoch editor, calling Greene “Vladimir Putin’s chief ‘useful idiot.’”

“Marjorie Taylor Greene’s position on Ukraine was clearly a bridge too far for Piers Morgan and the New York Post,” said Howard Polskin, who runs conservative media tracker TheRighting. “I was surprised — pleasantly so — that she was dubbed ‘Moscow Marjorie’ in the headline. Hopefully, that moniker will be an indelible stain on her reputation.”


The Post wasn’t alone. Last week, Fox News’ website (which is also owned by Murdoch) published an opinion piece titled “Marjorie Taylor Greene is an idiot. She is trying to wreck the GOP.” The editorial page of The Wall Street Journal (also owned by Murdoch) blasted “Rep. Mayhem Taylor Greene.” And far-right outlet Newsmax — not owned by Murdoch — ran a piece asking, “Who Put Marjorie Taylor Greene In Charge?”


The right-wing media industrial complex is sending a message to Greene loud and clear: Stop campaigning to oust Johnson. These outlets have no interest in repeating the disarray after Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., triggered the end of then-Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s speakership last fall. Johnson succeeded McCarthy, in large part thanks to Trump’s backing, but only after an embarrassing 22 days without a speaker.

But Greene seems not to be heeding the message. She went on Steve Bannon’s podcast Monday to repeat her demand for a new speaker. And she wasn’t the only member of Congress being obstreperous. Rep. Thomas Massie, who has backed Greene’s move against Johnson, attacked the speaker and Rep. Andy Barr, Massie’s fellow Kentucky Republican, on social media. In South Carolina, Illinois, Texas and Virginia, Republicans are campaigning against other GOP incumbents in primaries. This is not how members of the same caucus are supposed to behave, especially during a campaign year when Republicans are desperately trying to keep the House and win the presidency.

Whether or not Trump’s intervention makes a difference, the pile of House Republicans’ failures rises higher by the week.

Late Monday, after Greene told Bannon she would continue her quixotic quest, Trump himself — the grand duke of “burn it down” politics — shot the whole idea down. “We have a majority of one, OK?” he told conservative radio host John Fredericks. “It’s not like [Johnson] can go and do whatever he wants to do. I think he’s a very good person. … I think he’s trying very hard.”

Whether or not Trump’s intervention makes a difference, the pile of House Republicans’ failures rises higher by the week. Their attempt to impeach Biden fell apart when their star witness was arrested. Their other impeachment effort, of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, ended with a whimper. And their attempted “Appliance Week” — a series of lame messaging bills about gas stoves and other household items — had to be humiliatingly scrapped. Republicans allowed Trump to pick their speaker, but it turns out he’s about as good at picking speakers as he is at being president. And the beneficiaries are Joe Biden and the Democrats.

Nuova batosta per Donald Trump. Una decina di suoi alleati e fedelissimi, tra i quali l'ex capo dello staff della Casa Bianca Mark Meadows e l'ex avvocato Rudy Giuliani, sono indagati. Lo riporta la Cnn. Un Gran Giurì dell'Arizona ha incriminato gli alleati dell'ex presidente americano per i loro sforzi di ribaltare la sua sconfitta alle elezioni del 2020, compresi i falsi elettori di quello Stato e diversi individui collegati alla sua campagna. Tra gli incriminati c'è anche Boris Epshteyn, ex assistente della Casa Bianca che è ancora uno dei più stretti consiglieri di Trump. Il tycoon, come per l'indagine sui falsi elettori in Michigan, è indicato come cospiratore "non incriminato".

Una sorta di missione impossibile dati i tempi risicati. Sono in corso i negoziati tra Corea del Sud e Stati Uniti sulla condivisione dei costi per la difesa. In soldoni quanto Seul deve sborsare – attraverso l'Accordo sulle misure speciali (Sma) che viene rinnovato ogni 5 anni – per contribuire alla presenza di 28.500 soldati statunitensi sul suo territorio. Negoziati anticipati, come scrive il Korea Times, proprio per neutralizzare il «fattore Trump». Perché da queste parti se c’è un incubo che funesta le notti dei sudcoreani è proprio quello del ritorno del tycoon e delle sue richieste (esose). Non si tratta di un qualcosa di marginale, anzi. Come scrive il sito di analisi The Diplomat, «nessun’altra questione tocca il cuore dell’alleanza tra Corea e Usa più della questione della presenza delle forze statunitensi nella Penisola».
Nell’undicesimo Sma, raggiunto nel marzo 2021 durante l’amministrazione Biden, le due parti hanno stabilito che la Corea avrebbe pagato 1,18 trilioni di won (1,03 miliardi di dollari), segnando un aumento del 13,9% rispetto al precedente accordo firmato nel 2019 – il terzo aumento annuale più grande per Seul dalla creazione del patto nel 1991.

I dubbi che aleggiano sui negoziati sono molti. A partire dalla tempistica troppo ristretta. Ma anche sulla tenuta di un eventuale accorso. Secondo Yang Uk, analista presso l'Asan Institute of Policy Studies interpellato dal quotidiano coreano, «negoziare con l'amministrazione Biden sarebbe probabilmente più facile che con quella guidata da Trump. Il governo dovrebbe però tenere presente che il repubblicano potrebbe facilmente ribaltare l'accordo». «Anche se le due parti riuscissero a firmare un accordo prima del previsto – ha spiegato a sua volta Cha Du-hyeogn, ricercatore senior presso l’Asan Institute of Policy Studies –, Trump, in caso di rielezione, potrebbe semplicemente annullarlo. Non è uno scenario inverosimile, data la sua passata tendenza a ignorare gli accordi già firmati con altre nazioni se li ritiene ingiusti nei confronti degli Stati Uniti».

Ma perché una possibile vittoria di Trump è vista come portatrice di “sventure”? A spingere Seul nella paura del «fattore Trump» è la storia stessa delle precedenti negoziazioni. Burrascose e segnate dal continuo gioco al rialzo del tycoon. Come quando Trump chiese alla Corea del Sud di aumentare il suo contributo del 400%, ovvero a 5 miliardi di dollari, incassando il no di Seul. Ma non solo. Lo scorso anno il candidato alla presidenza Usa ha ribadito che «Seul ci paga poco», lasciando intendere che potrebbe spingersi a ritirare le truppe in caso non venisse raggiunto un accordo “adeguato”.
