Muhsin Hendricks, considered the world’s “first openly gay imam”, has been shot dead near the southern city of Gqeberha, South African police have said.

The imam, who ran a mosque intended as a safe haven for gay and other marginalised Muslims, was in a car with another person on Saturday when a vehicle stopped in front of them and blocked their exit, police said.

“Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots at the vehicle,” the Eastern Cape force said in a statement.

“Thereafter they fled the scene, and the driver noticed that Hendricks, who was seated at the back of the vehicle was shot and killed.”

A police spokesperson confirmed to AFP the authenticity of a video on social media that purported to show a targeted killing in Bethelsdorp near Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth.

“The motive for the murder is unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation,” police said, urging anybody with information to come forward.

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association denounced the killing.

“The ILGA World family is in deep shock at the news of the murder of Muhsin Hendricks, and calls on authorities to thoroughly investigate what we fear may be a hate crime,” the executive director, Julia Ehrt, said in a statement.

Hendricks, involved in various LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, came out as gay in 1996. Two years later he started hosting meetings in his home city for LGBTQ+ Muslims, who treated him like their community imam. “I opened my garage, put a carpet down and invited people to have tea and talk,” he told the Guardian in 2022.

In 2011 Hendricks bolstered his role as an imam figure by setting up a mosque space after a friend endured a local sermon condemning homosexuality. “I said, ‘Maybe it’s time we started our own space, so people can pray without being judged’.”

He ran the Al-Ghurbaah mosque at Wynberg near his birthplace, Cape Town. The mosque provides “a safe space in which queer Muslims and marginalised women can practise Islam”, its website states.

Hendricks, the subject of a 2022 documentary called The Radical, had previously alluded to threats against him.

He told the Guardian he had been advised to hire bodyguards but said he never feared attacks and insisted that “the need to be authentic” was “greater than the fear to die”.

Hendricks, who had worked as an Arabic language teacher and fashion designer, was 29 when he came out to his mother. Born into a Muslim family, he married a woman, had children, then divorced before revealing his sexuality to his family, eight years after his father died.

South Africa has one of the world’s highest murder rates, with 28,000 murders in the year to February 2024, according to police data.

Assailants stab two Israelis in Athens, one arrested
One of the attackers was a Palestinian from Gaza, the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem said.


Two Israeli were stabbed on Friday on Ermou Street, an upscale shopping avenue that runs through central Athens.

One of the assailants, originally from the Gaza Strip, was apprehended while the other fled the scene, Hebrew-language Ynet News reported.

The Gazan suspect “had participated in the past in pro-Palestinian demonstrations,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said.

The attackers targeted the Israelis after hearing them speak in Hebrew, with one of them wearing a Star of David necklace, the ministry added.

The victims did not require hospitalization, according to the ministry.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that the Israelis were a couple who were attacked after leaving a restaurant on their way back to their hotel.

In 2023, Greek police arrested two Pakistanis in Athens on suspicion of planning attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets.

Officers arrested two Pakistanis of Iranian origin, aged 27 and 29, who were planning attacks on Israelis in central Athens, Greek sources told media. One of the targets was a kosher restaurant and another a synagogue, according to reports.

In a statement, the Mossad said that those detained were part of a “wide Iranian network that operates from Iran and out of many countries.

“After the investigation of the suspects started in Greece, the Mossad assisted in uncovering intelligence related to the infrastructure, methods of operation and connection to Iran,” added the statement.

Over the last several years, Greece has accepted more than 214,000 refugees and almost 20,000 asylum-seekers, most of whom arrived from the Middle East, according to International Rescue Committee.

“His Life Is in Danger”: ISIS Leader Asking for Repatriation in France

One of the high dignitaries of the Islamic State, a French national, has been held prisoner by the Kurds in northern Syria since 2018. Believing his life to be in danger, he has asked to be repatriated to France, which has created controversy: it was in fact through him that the French learned of Daesh’s involvement in two terrorist attacks on French soil.

The man was born Adrien Guihal on the French civil register, but for the Islamic State, he goes by the name Abu Oussama al-Faransi. Aged 40, he converted to radical Islam in 2002. In 2008, he took part in an attempted terrorist attack on the headquarters of the French intelligence service, foiled by the French authorities, earning him a prison sentence. Released in 2012, he then worked in a car garage reputed to be a haunt of jihadists. He travelled to Syria in 2015. Three years later, he was captured by Kurdish forces in Raqqa, then the short-lived capital of the Islamic State. He has since been imprisoned in northeastern Syria.

His mother is behind his request for repatriation. She believes that his safety is no longer assured and that he is in danger there. The request has been submitted to the French authorities several times since December 2022. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Administrative Court of Paris have already opposed it. This time, Guihal’s mother intends to appeal to the Administrative Court of Appeal of Paris. On Wednesday, February 12th, Étienne Mangeot, the terrorist’s lawyer, filed the case with the court, aiming to force France to repatriate him. Two other families have joined the appeal.

Other French nationals fighting for the Islamic State are in the same situation. According to Mangeot, 65 French nationals are being held with Guihal in Derik prison, which is in the hands of Kurdish forces, in extremely difficult conditions that “place them in real danger of death.”

But Adrien Guihal is not just another Islamist. “He is undoubtedly one of the highest-ranking living dignitaries of the Islamic State,” admits Mangeot. Since his departure for Syria in 2015, Guihal has been the subject of an international arrest warrant. There, he worked in the communications department of the Islamic State. In 2016, the day after the attack in Nice, it was his voice that the French heard in the audio recording, claiming responsibility for the terrorist attack that left 86 people dead on the 14th of July, France’s national holiday. A month earlier, he also claimed responsibility for the murder of a police couple in Magnanville, a suburb of Paris, who were savagely stabbed to death in front of their three-year-old boy.

For the lawyer, it would be more “reassuring” today to know that Guihal is in prison in France and will be tried there, rather than potentially “on the loose” and being picked up by one or other of the Islamist groups still active in Syria. But this point of view is not shared by the French Foreign Ministry, which believes that, since the fall of the IS regime, people accused of complicity with the Islamic State should be tried locally. Mangeot would like the French courts to “have the last word,” and emphasises that Guihal and his accomplices are currently being held outside any legal framework, with no reaction from France: “I find that very unfortunate and a bit serious for the democracy that we are,” he told the press.

Overall, the majority of French people say they are against French jihadists returning to French soil. Imam Chalghoumi, known for his moderate stance, addressed the Minister of Justice and the Minister of the Interior on X to ask them not to give in:

Between 2022 and 2023, France only repatriated women and children, before ceasing all operations of this kind, provoking several international condemnations, including that of the European Court of Human Rights in 2022.

This week a small group of Muslims and Jews announced that they had a “secret” meeting last month in a Scottish castle. This meeting led to the signing of a Muslim-Jewish “reconciliation” agreement which was presented on Tuesday to King Charles at Buckingham Palace. The Drumlanrig Accord purports to set out “a new framework for engagement” between Britain’s Muslims and Jews “built on mutual respect, dialogue, and practical collaboration.”

According to The Times, the summit was attended by “Britain’s most senior Jewish and Muslim faith leaders” and the signing of the accords was “historic.” There was an obvious attempt to evoke a sense of awe and mystique with this event, making it quite probable that the paper was invited especially by the interfaith group as part of a calculated publicity stunt.

British Muslims will not be fooled

But British Muslims will not be fooled. The Zionist normalisation project has previously taken many forms, including a Jewish-Muslim women’s group and an interfaith vigil to “mourn lives lost in Israel and Gaza.” This latest initiative is a similar farce. The claim that this agreement is “historic” is both a vast overstatement and entirely unfounded, particularly as it fails to resonate with British Muslims.

It is also a lie that the Muslim figures in attendance were “senior” faith leaders. Imam Qari Asim of Leeds and the Shia imam Dr Sayed Razawi, among others, are hardly household names. Frankly, most British Muslims have never heard of any of them. Why is that? Because simply, you’d be hard pressed to find a mildly respected Muslim figure who would be willing to attend this sham of a spectacle.

No God-fearing Muslim would share a platform of any kind with Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who has on record praised the IDF and stated that he is “immensely proud” of their actions in Gaza. He stated last year: “What Israel is doing is the most outstanding possible thing that a decent, responsible country can do for its citizens.” He also revealed that this son, Danny, was serving in the IDF in Gaza.

Furthermore, the prominence of well-known Jewish figures, particularly Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, compared to the relatively unknown Muslims present, highlights the power dynamics at play and suggests who is leading this initiative. Only one party has something substantial to gain from this.

Ha evidenziato come i biradari abbiano costruito una "relazione speciale" con il Partito Laburista attraverso i sindacati, fornendo al partito "un elettorato già pronto".

Prima della sua vittoria elettorale, il Primo Ministro Keir Starmer ha dichiarato in unletterarivolto ai "leader religiosi", il suo governo avrebbe "garantito solide partnership con le comunità religiose".

Una partecipante allo studio è stata Saima Afzal, che nel rapporto è indicata come "Sarah", ma ha chiesto che il suo anonimato venisse revocato. Afzal ha deciso di candidarsi come consigliere locale per il partito laburista nel 1999 dopo che i "leader della comunità" pakistani locali stavano "attivamente scoraggiando" le donne dal candidarsi, affermando che "l'Islam non lo permetteva".

Afzal continuò a candidarsi per la selezione dei candidati, ma non riuscì a ottenere sostegno nella sua zona, dove "il partito laburista, influenzato dalla politica biradari, impose che le donne non fossero benvenute".

In seguito a questa "campagna diffamatoria", Afzal è stata deselezionata due anni dopo la sua elezione. Dopo aver contestato i consiglieri responsabili della sua deselezione, ha dovuto affrontare attacchi contro la sua proprietà, tra cui pneumatici di auto tagliati e la sua casa svaligiata. Crede che questi attacchi siano stati effettuati per impedirle di sporgere denuncia ufficiale.

Ghazala, Afzal e altri partecipanti hanno espresso preoccupazione per il fatto che, quando costretti a selezionare più donne per le elezioni locali, i "leader della comunità" del Partito Laburista avrebbero portato con sé "tigri di carta": membri femminili della famiglia "ritenuti sicuri, quindi controllabili".

Una terza partecipante allo studio, "Jalna", ha evidenziato come il settarismo nelle comunità musulmane l'avesse tenuta lontana dalla politica locale. Jalna appartiene alla comunità musulmana Ahmadiyya, considerata "eretica" da alcuni musulmani sunniti. I musulmani Ahmadi subiscono discriminazione e oppressione in tutto il mondo,compresonel Regno Unito.

Jalna credeva che il suo mentore, un uomo sud asiatico anche se non musulmano, "favorisse i candidati di altre fedi ed etnie nella comunità sud asiatica". A quanto si dice, ha detto che la sua selezione, rispetto a quella del candidato sikh che stava sostenendo, avrebbe "sollevato domande imbarazzanti". A quanto si dice, ha detto: "Il vostro gruppo [la comunità Ahmadiyya] ha troppi problemi".

Un'altra partecipante, "Tamara", ha affermato che, nonostante le sue speranze di diventare consigliera laburista, non sarebbe mai stata scelta perché apparteneva a una casta "che non era accettata dai biradari della città in cui viveva".

Oltre a questi problemi all'interno delle loro comunità, il rapporto afferma che una serie di altri fattori, tra cui il razzismo e gli atteggiamenti anti-musulmani, ostacolano ulteriormente la partecipazione delle donne delle minoranze alla politica locale.

Roorkee, Uttarakhand: 14-year-old Hindu girl abducted, parents suspect two Muslim men, communal tensions erupts

On Sunday, 9th February, massive communal tensions erupted in the Rorkee area of Uttrakhand after a 14-year-old Hindu girl was found missing. The family members of the girl alleged that she had been kidnapped by two individuals from the Muslim community, reportedly two brothers. As per the reports, the persons from that community also pelted stones at Hindus as the latter protested against the incident and demanded justice.

The incident reportedly happened on 7th of February evening when the 14-year-old girl went missing from the Laksar village of Roorkee. The parents of the girl began looking for the girl. Meanwhile, one of the villagers informed the parents that he saw two boys from the specific community taking her away with them. Following this, the parents reached the police station and filed a complaint saying that their daughter had been kidnapped.

On 9th February, the Hindu organizations learned about the incident and protested against the accused. The Hindu members along with the locals gathered in the village and demanded justice for the parents of the girl. Following this, people from specific community also gathered and began pelting stones at the Hindus. They also abused and threatened the Hindus as the two groups engaged in an argument.

The police eventually reached the spot immediately after being informed. They resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd and calm the chaos. The Hindus questioned the police action and demanded that the accused be identified and punished strictly. The family of the girl meanwhile stated that they would set themselves on fire if their girl was not recovered.
