The Region of Lombardy covers a territory of about 24,000 sq km, with almost 10 million inhabitants, 12 provinces and 1,546 municipalities. With a gross domestic product of over 300 billion Euros (20% of the national figure), is one of the most economically advanced region of Italy and Europe.

The city of Milan, the capital of Lombardy, is home to the Italian Stock Exchange, one of Europe’s principal financial markets, and also houses the largest trade fair centre of southern Europe. Milan and Lombardy will host EXPO 2015, a universal exhibition on the theme “Feeding the Planet - Energy for Life”, an important opportunity to meet and share policies and innovative tools for agriculture, nutrition, well-being, biodiversity and sustainability.
The university network comprises 12 institutions, with 250,000 matriculation a year. Firms based in Lombardy are about 800,000, most of which are located in industrial districts with strong links to research and innovation.
Lombardy Region is one of the four Motors of Europe. It takes part to some other interregional networks: the Assembly of European Regions and the World Regions Forum.
The regional government of Lombardy has been participating to ECREINetwork since the beginning and is one of the signatories of the “ECREIN Charter” in 2007. Within ECREIN+ project, Lombardy Region wants to share its experience in promoting eco-innovation, as a key for the competitiveness and a better environmental quality of regional development.

, all'interno dei gruppi etnici europei puoi distinguere quelli nazionali e al loro interno provare a fare differenze regionali che però man mano che il gruppo si restringe (per dire Europeo-latino-francese-provenzale-nizzardo) le differenze calano vistosamente. Il fatto che l'Italia sia stata sempre considerata tale anche quando era divisa significa che c'è un substrato comune.
