Cameron will be Prime Minister by tomorrow morning*

* I'm reluctant to make predictions after the last week but it seems 95% likely.

The Tories are optimistic that they'll get an agreement to form a coalition with the Liberal Democrats rather than support for a minority government. They think this will be most stable government possible. Clegg will be Deputy Prime Minister.

"Gordon Brown wants to get out of Number 10 as soon as possible, according to cabinet sources.

"But constitutionally he cannot leave until he can tell the Queen that she should send for David Cameron.

"So Mr Brown waits on the outcome of the Liberal Democrat meeting of MPs and executive tonight.

"Will he go to the Palace this evening? It remains possible. Would Mr Cameron swiftly follow? He would have to.

"Otherwise Britain would go through the night without a prime minister."

1733I've received a text message from someone inside Downing Street effectively conceding defeat, says the BBC's Nick Robinson. It said that Labour and the Lib Dems were just going through the motions when they engaged in talks earlier, and Nick Clegg had already decided to work with the Conservatives. The text added that Labour would now "have to regroup as the only progressive party".
