He says the Labour Party is damaging itself by trying to continue talks with the Lib Dems and should call it quits.

3.50pm Hoey joins the mutiny

Support for a Labour pact with the Lib Dems seems to be slipping rapidly away.

On the BBC, Kate Hoey, Labour MP, holds her hands up and admits she's in opposition. "We have to admit that we lost the election.

"Enough is enough," she says, and in a phrase that may be a little familiar: "This can't go on like this."

Other mutineers we know include Andy Burnham, Jack Straw and Diana Johnson; our chief political correspondent says Bob Ainsworth, Sadiq Khan and Liam Byrne.

The captain and his mates are holed up in the cabin, muskets at the ready - probably preparing to surrender.

3.46pm Cameron's smile - and an endgame?

David Cameron has just emerged from a meeting with MPs with a broad smile on his face.

Observers are using the word "endgame". Our own Francis Elliott, deputy political editor - speaking on the BBC - says we'll have a deal "within 24 hours" - and I think he's being cautious.

Could the Lib Dems' 7.30pm meeting be it?

But, in response to the question, "Have the talks collapsed with Labour?" another Lib Dem insider has told our correspondent Mike Sergeant: "No. Our expectation is that talks will continue."

Si è già chiuso lo spazio per una trattativa tra Labour e Lib-dem, annunciata domenica dal premier Gordon Brown, disposto anche a farsi da parte per favorire la riuscita del negoziato. Downing Street, presenti lo stesso Brown e alcuni ministri, ha riconosciuto che i colloqui dei laburisti con la formazione guidata da Nick Clegg "non hanno raggiunto nè raggiungeranno una conclusione positiva", e si sta ora studiando come annunciare "che la loro parte di negoziati è chiusa". Lo ha detto Jon Pienaar, corrispondente politico di Bbc Radio 5. Intanto, fonti laburiste a Sky fanno sapere che "i colloqui con Libdem non sono mai decollati".

4.25pm Cameron goes to see staff at CCHQ

David Cameron has arrived at CCHQ with Eric Pickles, Tory chairman, and says he's there to speak to his staff. He hasn't been there for a few days.

The staff are also reportedly "putting ties on". Deeply, deeply significant.


4.15pm Brown quits, reports Standard

The Evening Standard is reporting that Gordon Brown is to quit tonight and David Cameron to be Britain's next prime minister.

"Gordon Brown is set to resign tonight and allow David Cameron to be Britain's new Prime Minister," they report.

"The Labour leader's final desperate attempt to cling on to power with a Lib-Lab deal crumbled amid a rebellion on his own side and policy disagreements with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

"This afternoon he retreated to No 10 to discuss his situation with senior ministers, friends and wife Sarah.

Mr Brown had planned to stay in power until the summer if the deal had worked, earning himself a place in history as the man who won a historic fourth term for Labour."

in verità è la solita sinistra del labour che ha impedito il lib-lab anche in altri tempi, dovreste ringraziarli.....
