GDP jumps 4.9% as the U.S. economy speeds up

Consumer spending, inventory rise boost GDP

From the Commerce Department: "The increase in real GDP reflected increases in consumer spending, private inventory investment, exports, state and local government spending, federal government spending, and residential fixed investment that were partly offset by a decrease in nonresidential fixed investment."

"Within services, the leading contributors were housing and utilities, health care, financial services and insurance, and food. Within goods, the leading contributors to the increase were other nondurable goods (led by prescription drugs) as well as recreational goods and vehicles. The increase in private inventory investment reflected increases in manufacturing and retail trade."

US Personal Spending Rises More Than Expected

Personal spending in the US rose by 0.7% from a month earlier in September, following a 0.4% increase in August and beating the market consensus of a 0.5% advance, boosted by both expenditures on services and goods. At the same time, personal income increased by only 0.3%, following a 0.4% rise in August and a market consensus of 0.4%.
