Migrants Terrorize Spanish Town Over Imam’s Eviction

The historic Catalan town of Salt has suffered two consecutive nights of riots following the arrest of a sub-Saharan imam. He had been evicted from a house he had illegally occupied for five years without paying rent. In response, immigrant groups and radical left-wing activists have vandalised property, attacked the police, set fire to dumpsters, and damaged urban infrastructure.

The first episode of violence occurred when around 200 people gathered in front of a local police station, throwing stones and eggs at the officers. The police deployed riot units to control the situation. The second night was even more intense, with hooded individuals attacking law enforcement, setting urban infrastructure on fire, and spreading chaos in the streets. The incidents resulted in six arrested, three of them minors, and one officer sustaining minor injuries.

The disturbances have affected public safety and heightened the sense of disorder in the municipality. Residents worry about these incidents becoming normal and the lack of effective deterrents. Rioters have openly boasted about their actions without fear of legal consequences.

Police are investigating what is understood to be a possible Islamic terrorist motivation for a stabbing in south Belfast earlier this month.

A 51-year-old man was injured in the attack close to the Ormeau Road area on 1 March. He has since been discharged from hospital.

Assistant Chief Constable Davy Beck said a motive had not been established but police were exploring a number of factors, "including the possibility that this was a hate crime, a mental health episode or driven by religious ideology".

An 18-year-old man was arrested under the Terrorism Act on suspicion of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

It is believed that he is from North Africa and that in May 2023 he travelled to Heathrow Airport and then to Dublin.

From Dublin he made his way to Belfast, arriving in September 2023.

BBC News NI understands that the PSNI is working with counter terrorism police in Britain and also liaising with Gardaí (Irish police) in the Republic of Ireland.

The British police have arrested two men on suspicion of attacking Natiq Malikzada, an activist and opponent of the current regime in Afghanistan.

Malikzada, a 29-year-old Afghan refugee and an outspoken critic of extremism, was attacked in his room at a refugee hotel on February 13. He sustained injuries to his hand, shoulder, and chest during the assault.

Hampshire police issued a statement saying that two men, aged 25 and 29, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Malikzada, who came to the UK in September 2023 on a scholarship for a training course by the British Foreign Office, had a student visa. After completing his course in October 2024, he applied for asylum in the UK and stayed in the International Paters Hotel in Aldershot for more than two months.

The activist had previously warned about the Taliban’s influence in the UK. He had reported seeing Afghan refugees in the hotel who openly supported the Taliban.

Malikzada claims to have had arguments with pro-Taliban refugees in the hotel regarding women’s rights and the campaign to boycott Afghanistan’s cricket team.

The attack on Malikzada comes amid previous threats by some Taliban officials, who had warned opponents of the group living abroad. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of activists who oppose the Taliban and their supporters in exile.

The arrest of the two suspects marks an important step in addressing the rising tensions and threats faced by Afghan refugees who are critical of the Taliban. It also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by refugee communities, particularly those affected by the Taliban’s reach.

Selon France 3 Régions, ce Marocain en situation irrégulière n’a pas pu être auditionné par les enquêteurs et le sera “lorsque son état de santé le permettra”. Le jeune homme de 21 ans était “en rupture de traitement pour une pathologie mentale” indique le procureur de Grasse dans un communiqué. L’assaillant aurait déclaré au médecin avoir agi sur instructions de “voix”.

Une enquête pour tentative d’homicide sur personne dépositaire de l’autorité publique est ouverte.

“Encore un qui va être désigné irresponsable par la Justice ?”, s’est interrogé rapidement le maire LR de Cannes, David Lisnard, affirmant que “le même individu avait été arrêté il y a quelques jours par la police municipale après avoir dégradé un véhicule du service”.

Selon le parquet, l’homme avait déjà été condamné à deux reprises en région parisienne, à six mois avec sursis en 2023 pour vol aggravé, et à trois mois avec sursis en 2024 pour vol en réunion. Le 11 mars, il avait été déféré au parquet de Grasse en vue d’une reconnaissance préalable de culpabilité pour dégradation d’un véhicule de police municipale. Il avait alors été “condamné à une amende de 300 euros et cinq ans d’interdiction du territoire français”, a précisé le procureur. (…)
